DS' bday party delima: WWYD? (clicky)

I posted a few days ago about being at my mom's while she's hospitalized, and I'm still not sure when we'll head home.  DS' bday is in just over a week, and I have NOTHING planned yet (no invites, no details, not even a general concept or theme) b/c of all the uncertainty about where we'll be, when we'll be home, etc.  I'm making this clicky for user ease, but if you have thoughts, ideas or explanations to add, please do so.  I'm kind of just starting to really try to figure this out, so I can use all the help I can get.

The one thing he wanted to do for his bday was to have a party with all his friends from school, and I really wanted to do that for him too.  Right now, I'm kind of thinking about doing something with our immediate family (DH, DS, DD and me) asap once we get home and then delaying his party until things calm down.

If your child received an invite to a bday party for a classmate and the guest of honor's bday was actually in Jan (which is noted on the PS calendar so not a secret), would you find it odd or be less inclined to allow your child to attend the party if it was held in May (for example...not sure about date yet)?

  • I think it's perfectly understandable to delay the party with friends.  I don't know that I would wait four months but pushing it out to February makes sense to me.

  • I understand you are going through a lot right now (I am so sorry). Personally I think just a spring party with his friends would be fun idea - especially with him being so far from home right now. Not sure if I would make it a birthday party though. I would celebrate his birth with family, since it is a very special day for him and you.

  • Honestly I don't think people pay that much attention to birthdays on the calendar.

And... My December 27th child's party is being held January 28th.  He's even brining treats to class that same week - a full month after his birthday.

I really don't think people care and honestly it's gonna be this way for the rest of his life (meaning the party around a month after his real birthday).

    No problem receiving "yes" RSVP's.

The great news is that at this age they're really too young to really care.  Tell a kid he's gonna have a party in his honor with his friends, cake, etc and they'll be happy campers!!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • May was a little arbitrary, but I was thinking worst case scenario.  If she stays in the hospital awhile longer and then passed away (G-d forbid!), I know it would take me a bit to get on my feet enough to be able to do his party.  Ideally, we'd do it much sooner, but I just have no idea right now what the next weeks and months look like for us.

  • Given that I am guessing your mom's illness and passing will not be a secret, it is likely you will have a great deal of understanding from other parents.

    ditto this.

DD is happy to go play w/ her friends whenever/whereever and as long as I'm available, I'm happy to go have her be entertained and hang out w/ some other parents.

  • A girl in DD's class had her bday party the weekend before Halloween because she wanted a costume party.  I didn't realize until way after the fact that her bday wasn't until around Thanksgiving.  Didn't bother me a bit, and the reason is less important than yours.  :)
