sentimental birthday ideas
My 2 lb preemie born 13 weeks early is now almost 20 lbs and turning one next week. In my eyes, this is truly miraculous and looking back on 80 days in the NICU, 3 surgeries, countless heartaches and countless victories, I can't seem to be creative enough to emphasize this monumental day for us without bursting into tears! I'm gonna make a slide show using pictures I'm putting into a photobook of his first year, and I saw on a previous post about using his clothes to show how big he's gotten. Does anyone have any cute ideas to celebrate a first birthday for a preemie?

Congrats on your healthy baby!
My guys are turning one next week as well. We have asked that in lieu of gifts, friends and family make a donation to the NICU in the babies' honor. We think this is a special way to mark their big day.

We made a movie of her first life. It is probably similar to the slideshow you mentioned, but the pictures were set to music. Second, we also asked people to donate to the NICU instead of buying us gifts. Finally, I made my daughter's first birthday shirt. On the back of the shirt I put her birthday stats...
"Born......1 lbs. 10 oz. & 13 in."
"Today... 17 lbs. 3 oz. & 28 in."
I plan to do the first and the las thing ever year of her life until she turns 18.
I like the idea of a slideshow! I also like the idea of asking family or friends to donate to the NICU in lieu of gifts. We made a donation in lieu of Christmas gifts for my parents, and it was really special.
Do you have a hand or footprint from birth? If so, what about doing an archival print with LO's birth hand/foot print and one from his/her first birthday and framing it with then/now stats? Or a really sweet book like, On The Night You Were Born, and write a special message in it for LO to read one day?
Congrats on such an awesome milestone! I donated my LO's preemie clothes to March of Dimes but hung onto a few things because I just didn't realize how tiny he truly was at the time!
off topic... we got a copy of On The Night You Were Born for christmas and it is the sweetest book.

It's my favorite:) Got it as a shower gift and read it to LO often before bed. Sometimes if I'm reading it to him alone in the house, or have had a glass of wine ha, it can bring on the waterworks! I think for all preemie Moms our LO's birthdays bring back a lot of mixed emotions, and our preemies are special in so many different ways. So I think this book is just about perfect!
I love this book! My best friends who threw my shower bought it and used it as a guest book for the shower. Each guest wrote a little message to Baby Caroline in it. My husband and I read it when we got home and cried our eyes out!
PS I LOVE the idea of donating to the NICU in lieu of gifts! Totally stealing that idea!
