anyone been on antibiotics in the 1st tri

I am heading to my primary doc today to see what is going on with this cold or whatever it is.  I am afraid he will put me on antibiotics.  I am still in the 1st tri.  Anyone every been on them in the 1st tri?

Re: anyone been on antibiotics in the 1st tri

  • I was with Will. I had a miserable sinus infection when I was 7 or 8 weeks along. Both my RE and my ENT assured me that it was far more important for me to be healthy than it was for me to avoid antibiotics. And they were so right!

I hope you feel better soon!

  • I was with both babies. With Caroline I had a UTI, and with Parker I had a URI.

  • I'm just finishing up a second round of antibiotics.  In my case, it was more beneficial to kill the bacteria (HIB) rather than worry about the antibiotics.  I was just finishing up my 1st tri when I started.  My doctor said he doesn't like to prescribe antibiotics in the 1st tri, but sometimes you have to.  I called my OB and they had absolutely no problem with it.  I started with Zithromax and am now on Augmentin.

The reason I started did two rounds in because they really thought it was bacterial due to the length of time I had been sick (1 1/2 weeks) and they went ahead and prescribe Zithromax.  By time we got the throat culture results back (had to wait for a weekend and holiday) I had finished that and they said it wouldn't completely kill the bacteria so I ended up on Augmentin.

I think if you actually have a bacterial infection then you do need antibiotics, but if they aren't certain it's bacterial I would wait it out a bit if you can.

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • Thanks, ladies.  I ended up with bordetella pertussis (not the whooping cough) and a sinus infection.  I am now on amoxicillin.
