Austin Babies

If you CDed, how did you handle registering?

I know it's waaay early, and I haven't sold DH 100% on it yet, but I'm really wanting to CD. However, I know that there are lots of different brands and styles. I'm worried about registering for a particular one, then finding out after that it doesn't fit my baby well and that another one would be better. I know there are some companies that do trials, which sounds ideal, but I want to be able to register as well.

How did you handle it? Did you just gamble that the one(s) you picked would work? Or would it be super tacky to ask for gift certificates to a particular place so I could try some then buy the kind that works?

  • I'm dealing with this right now.  I just registered for several recommended kinds, and only one or two of each. We plan on easing into CDing after the first couple of weeks, so if I don't have enough in the beginning, I'm okay with that.  Once I know what works, I'll buy more and sell the ones that we don't like.  It's hard to choose though!  I went to B a b y Ea rth and looked at them in person, and then narrowed it down from there for the registry.

  • I knew which kind I wanted because of ease of use and convenience and I was confident that they'd fit. We use the BumGenius Elementals which are expensive but the most like disposables on the market. I read a ton of reviews and fit never seemed to be an issue, esp once the baby gets a little bigger. (DS started off huge, so it wasn't an issue, but we also used disposables for the first 3 months or so because I didn't want to have to worry about a single solitary thing but the baby for the first little bit.) I have since tried a few other pocket diapers and I still stand by my original decision--the BG Elementals are pricey but I love not stuffing or doing any other work.

I registered for the ones I wanted at Mom's Milk Boutique (their website is their name) and since then I've bought a lot of things from them. I love that they have free shipping and their customer service is impeccable.

Few people will shop for shower gifts online because, at least in my experience, most go out and get a gift the day before or day of at a store. My sisters bought us our CDs because they knew that was something that I really wanted and they planned ahead :) We were also prepared that probably no one would buy them and were were just going to buy the whole stash ourselves, so it was a nice surprise that we got them!

I, personally, don't think there's a polite way to tell all guests that you want GCs. You can certainly let the host know and she can try to spread the word, but I wouldn't write it on a shower invite or something.

I am really happy that we CD. I did it for the sole reason that it was such a huge cost saver and almost 2 years later I'm still really pleased with our decision. I plan to CD the twins as well.

  • I gambled and just registered for Bum Genius, which no one bought.  ha!  You can register with www.cottonbabies.com and request gift certificates.  I don't really think that's tacky, but that's coming from someone who wanted to CD and wasn't sure what to do, either.

FWIW, we do use BG and they work great for us.  I tried one Fuzzi Bunz and didn't like it so I didn't buy more.

  • Thanks everyone! I'll do some research and I'm sure I'll be back. Maybe if I can register at a store or two in person that have them and on Amazon or somewhere similar. It's a lot to think about!

They're in RR, but it's not too far.  They also do a CD class that I really wanted to go to, but none of the times worked for me.  I love them!

  • I'd probably register for a few of the most popular brands like BumGenius, FuzziBunz and GroVia.  If they don't work out, there'll probably someone you can sell to as opposed to a smaller, lesser known brand.
  • I just registered on Amazon for a few essential items and some things for the newborn stage (we did pre-folds for the first month). So I registered for detergent, snappies, Thirsties covers, disposable liners, CD-safe rash cream, wet bags, etc.

  • I registered for several brands on Amazon, but received almost none. People seem to like items they can touch, and if they aren't in stock at Target or BRU, you aren't likely to get them, in my experience.

I wound up buying used diapers (mostly BumGenius pockets) on Craigslist. Since we have twins, we were able to get a good sized stash pretty cheaply that way.
