BLW question

Ok so we feed LO rice cereal 2 times when he was 5 months old and then changed to BLW. We are having a great time with BLW but I am a little afraid it back fired. DH tried giving LO oatmeal today and we tried yogurt yesterday and LO hates it and spits it out. I am thinking he does not like the mushy texture and hates being fed. Should I be worried at all that he doesnt like soft mushy things? Does your LO do ok with softer stuff?

Re: BLW question

  • DS doesn't like the mushy stuff and is still not eating much BLW style! loI. Any chance I get I offer him something and he loves to gnaw on things he is starting to actually eat little amounts, with the mushy stuff I kept offering oatmeal, I've made him apple/pear with yogurt puree, carrots/sweet potato puree, bananas with a spoon and no luck so I had almost given up on soft/fed with a spoon foods until my mom made him chicken soup and I mashed some chicken and veggies and we couldn't feed him fast enough! He was opening his mouth, even "chewing"! we tried the same with beef this time, same thing. So I think it's a matter of taste. I wouldn't worry if I was you. My pedi said yesterday, kids don't actually need food until 1 yr old, that they actually figure it out on their own and will eventually eat all textures--and it's normal to show preference.

  • I don't do BLW, but LO does not like purees anymore.  I give him oatmeal with chunks of banana and yogurt with chunks of either banana or roasted apples or pears.  If there's no texture, he wants no part of it.

I've also done yogurt with quinoa, which adds some interesting texture to it as well.  Good luck!

I think it's Token who just spreads some yogurt on a tupperware lid and lets her son just eat it himself?  Maybe something like that would work.  Maybe he just wants to do it himself.

I tried that too after Token suggested it, didn't work for us, if he doesn't like it doesn't matter how I offer it, he won't eat it.

  • My DS won't eat the purees anymore either. We haven't done any BLW with him, but I'm thinking about switching.  Any question is...when you give your DS a piece of something, say a banana, how big of a piece do you give him?

  • Just keep trying. As with any new foods, it can take several tries (I mean, 10-15 sometimes!) before you can determine whether it's a texture issue or if he doesn't like it. Keep offering it and don't sweat it too much if he shows little interest.

I don't know how much he eats, but Owen prefers to do it himself. Being as I don't NEED him to let me spoonfeed him (obviously, everyone eventually gets a self-feeding kid), I have chosen not to push it.

It's good to keep offering, though, somehow. Otherwise you end up with my sister's kids that don't really eat anything like soup, stew, oatmeal, etc.
