Let's talk mattresses

What is everyone going with? Have you even started to look at crib mattresses yet?

We got the Graco Lauren crib and a lot of reviews say that only specific mattresses fit into it because they need to have square edges, and not round. The Sealy-Soybean Foamcore has great reviews but some of the complaints are that it isn't even made of soy-bean and has a vinyl cover that still could give of chemical/gas fumes. Should I really be worried about that gasses and chemicals, or should I go off of the tons of positive reviews?

Re: Let's talk mattresses

  • I have no idea, but wanted to say thanks for bringing this up- I'm interested to see the replies too. I just looked into crib mattresses for the first time and was overwhelmed by the options.

  • I registered for that one, but got a hand-me-down from a friend that is a Sealy coil mattress. If the Sealy doesn't fit, I will buy the Soybean Foamcore.

  • I haven't begun to look yet because we are still narrowing down our crib, but the Graco Lauren is on our list. I hadn't done too much research yet, so I didn't realize anything about specific mattresses fitting in it. The only thing I know is that it's supposed to be firm! Hopefully some other bumpies have more info

  • I also wanted to add that Baby Bargains recommends the foam mattresses over the coils because they are lighter-weight and last just as long. They are also generally much more affordable. GL!

This is what I have read as well. I think the foam ones range anywhere from $70-$200 depending on what brand. The Sealy that we are looking at is around $120 I think.

  • Yikes!  I didn't know that certain cribs only fit with certain mattresses!  We were thinking about the lauren, and also want to get the munchkin Organic crib mattress from target...  but I guess I'll have to check it out first!

  • We also have the Graco Lauren crib- we love it. We're getting a second one for LO#2. We use the Serta organic mattress at BRU- it's about the same price as the crib ($175 or so), but we splurged on it since the crib was so cheap!

Also, I never heard anything about using a specific mattress for the crib (I'm not sure if they have changed the crib design a little since we bought in Spring 2010)- our mattress has rounded corners and there have been no problems.

  • We went with a Colgate organic mattress from the boutique we ordered our furniture from.

They provided us with a little tidbit of info too... if you're looking for a "name brand" mattress at BRU, look very carefully at the label.  The Sealy mattresses they sell are actually Kolcraft and they just purchased the rights to the Sealy name.  This may not matter to some but if you think you're buying a Sealy when in fact, it's a Kolcraft, that sort of stinks.

  • We got a 2 stage infant/toddler mattress with the square sides, which is supposed to prevent less opportunity for in between the matress/crib. It's by Colgate. When they are through with the infant side, then you flip it over for the toddler side. It was a little pricey, but totally worth it and also it was 20% off when we got it!

This is from their website (we got it from USA Baby):

All mattresses that are created in the Colgate brand are Greenguard certified, which means that there are no toxins and other adverse chemicals that are going to affect the development of infants and children that are sleeping on the mattresses. Colgate 2-Stage Posture Support InnerspringThese mattresses are used in both educational facilities and also through many hospitals. This way, parents that are making the choice of a Colgate mattress for their home can ensure that they are getting the highest quality crib mattress available, ensuring the highest level of safety for the child sleeping on the mattress. There are many styles and types of mattresses that are available through the brand and parents can choose types of mattresses that are going to suit the needs, the style of crib that has been chosen and even the durability that they would like to create. Choosing a durable mattress that will easily wipe clean can help to increase the durability of the mattress, as children are bound to spit up and toddlers are bound to have accidents in the bed. Taking these aspects into account, parents that choose a durable mattress that is created from a textile that is going to wick the moisture away from the surface is going to ensure that the crib is going to outlast other brands that are unprotected.

    Infant side:

    • Specially shaped square corners for a snug fit. This safer design prevents baby from getting caught in the corners of the crib, and prevents sheets from coming off, which can be a suffocation hazard to the infant.

    • 2-inch hypoallergenic foam base gives better support for the undeveloped back and neck area.

    • Fiber wrap is made up of man made materials, non allergenic. Provides a safe, evenly supported sleeping surface for infant and toddler.

    • Staph-Guard Cover is the same fabric protection used in hospitals. This extremely safe surface resists bacteria and germ growth. It is also water, mildew and rot resistant.

    • imageThicker protective wrap provides even support and the additional non-allergenic layers provide a plush sleeping surface.

Toddler Side: A firm support structure offers durability and support for toddlers. 15 gauge interwoven continuous coil system is firmer and less likely to develop lumps and ridges. Extra heavy steel gauge border rods keep sides, corners and edges firm, just like an adult mattress. Non-allergenic materials and Staph-Guard protection is used throughout the entire crib mattress.

  • I was 100% set on this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Colgate-Classica-Foam-Mattress-White/dp/B000VJJF60/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3AQE0UKUA8Z43&colid=2QDE0HYYVGOJS

Colgate is top rated by amazon and by baby bargains.  But then a friend from church gave me her expensive, barely used organic mattress for free so I'm using it instead.

  • We used the Colgate infant/toddler mattress posted above with DD1.  She just moved to a big girl bed, so we'll use the Colgate again with DD2.
  • Thanks for the link - I just purchased this mattress. It had great reviews. I honestly hadn't even started looking but the Colgate mattresses seem to be the best out there.
