  CD 1 is the first day flow is strong enough to have to use a pad or tampon.

  If you chart with FF, input it as spotting. FF will not count spotting as CD1. HTH!

  Optimus+Prime:

  Is day 1 the day where you first notice brown spotting or is it the day where you actually see red blood? I feel like this is such an elementary question and I should know, but I don't.

   Generally it's first day you need a tampon/pad, first day of actual flow. I normally have 2 days of spotting before AF arrives.
