Food Allergy

No soy or milk--what do they drink?

DS is 13 months and was on Alimentum for months 6-12 (EBFed before then). He doesn't have a milk allergy but apparently has a sensitivity (it gives him stomach aches, binds him, or sometimes causes diarrhea). We transitioned to milk from the Alimentum, though, without too many problems. But that must have been a "honeymoon" phase because now he's waking up at night with discomfort, has struggled with constipation, etc. I'd like to avoid soy milk right now, but would like to wean him from cow's milk and try something else to see if going dairy-free helps him. DH is more reluctant because he doesn't just want to give him juice or water all day. I know he needs a "milk substitute" but what do you recommend? He's a very healthy/good eater in general but I want to make sure if we omit milk that he's not missing out on anything essential.

  • My 17 mo old dd has milk protein allergy and sensitivity to soy milk. We have her on Rice Milk and I couldn't be happier with it. She loves it and has no problems with it. I know others who have used Almond milk as a substitute for cows milk as well. My dd has tree nut allergy so that isn't an option for us. Good luck.

  • We do Coconut milk w/30% calcium.  Rice was not an option and we are avoiding tree nuts as well so Almond was not either.  So far so good.  It does have 0 g protein so I have to make sure she gets plenty from other sources.

  • kids drink milk for the fats and the calcium.  If he's a good eater and you don't mind cooking/monitoring his diet closely- you could probably meet his nutritional needs through his diet and skip the milk.

Our son gets a combo of enriched rice milk with condensed (full fat) coconut milk.  he is not a great eater and some days that's one of our only avenues to get calories into him.

  • We do coconut or almond (both unsweetened).  If you don't have to worry about tree nuts, almond is actually really good.

  • We use unsweetened, enriched rice milk.  DS loves it.

  • Both of my kids have a whey (protein in Cow's milk) and soy allergy. We use Rice Dream and Silk Coconut Milk.
  • My friends have had good luck with goat's milk for their one-year-old. For whatever reason he can't tolerate cow's milk but has no issues with goat. They can buy it at normal grocery stores.

E is doing the same thing.  He seems to be really gassy, too.  I thought it might be the dairy, but hadn't thought about using rice or coconut milk.

    Thanks for the tips, everyone.
