Do you "window shop"?

When the weather was nice, I went for walks every day. Sometimes for an hour or more, sometimes multiple walks a day. Now it's too cold. Now when I'm bored, we end up going shopping. I don't buy anything ridiculous (usually things that we need and never big ticket items) but I end up spending money every time I leave the house! Money that is only being spent out of boredom. It has to stop. Today I decided i'd just window shop. The goal was to walk a lot and spend nothing.  We got out, walked around, browsed... and I bought a new clock, a jacket (on clearance for $8!!!) for P, and a caramel macchiato!  Window shopping is just not possible!!!!  I am going to start shopping at crappy stores from now on. Or leaving my purse in the car.

Is it just me? Do you (successfully, intentionally) window shop?

Re: Do you "window shop"?

  • Never I spent almost $200 today in boredom purchases.  Now don't get me wrong it wasn't wasteful and it was stuff I'd eventually buy. (Table runner, Saints flag, bread and a few things at target) I wouldn't have bought that stuff if I had just stayed at home.

  • Nah, like you, I usually find a deal too good to pass up, or end up buying a coffee or something. I guess it's comparable to spending money on admission somewhere...usually I end up spending around $10-20. I try to go to the library or somewhere else indoors where we can roam if I feel I have been "window" shopping too much in a week.

  • I window shop on the internet all the time. :) I also window shop IRL but not as much. If I take the time to go shop, I'm after something.
  • I window shop online alot, but I don't shop very much at all with DD, unless it's a quick trip to Target. I do not find it enjoyable with an active toddler, who doesn't last long in a stroller, or cart!

  • I have a very hard time not finding a reason to buy things.  It is my resolution to shop less.

  • We did today. Technically I bought stuff, but I had a GC so it was "free". The only other thing I "bought" was lunch.

I use DD as my excuse. She won't sit still long enough for me to shop properly.

  • I'm totally incapable of window shopping. I used to walk DD1 around the mall after she was born since it was too cold outside (she was a January baby) and I felt like I needed to get out of the house. I ended up spending so much money on things we didn't really need. Now, I never go to a store (or near one for that matter) unless I have a list of specific things I need to buy.

  • I window shop alot.  I rarely pay full price for my clothes, so I will go to a store and try on things, and then wait for them to go on sale online, then order.

Today I went into Target to kill 45 minutes between when I got out of school, and my massage appointment.  I ended up trying on a great clearance dress, then decided to buy it.  Walked over to books and bought 2 new books...then walked by diapers and grabbed some more Pull-ups for DD.

$60 on random things.  Oh and I already have about 4 new books already that I need to read, lol.  I just can't stop buying books!

Aah Target is the WORST!  It's like a black hole. I go in for laundry detergent and come out $150 later with 8 bags of crap! ESPECIALLY since having a baby!

  • I'm 100 times worse now that DD is here. I can't stop buying stuff for her. So I window shop online all day, then when we are out, and even if in a time crunch, I still have to 'shop' for her. I can't ever go into Target without walking out with stuff. I don't buy myself anything anymore, it's all spent on Teagan.

  • Amen to the Target stuff. I really never go out shopping unless I'm looking for something specific, but if I go to get that one specific things at Target, I am absolutely guaranteed to find 8,653 other things that "would go great in the bathroom/guest room/kitchen" or that "would be the perfect organizer for this space". All things I probably would have gotten eventually, and I don't regret the purchase, but still... money that wouldn't have been spent right now.

I "window shop" online, if you can call it that, but I almost never ever buy anything online. We're talking no more than 5x/year, excluding others' birthdays and Christmas.

  • I too am incapable of browsing without buying. The part time job I have is in retail and I have bought soooo much crap since I started working there. I see nice things on sale while I am working and then get an employee discount on top of it so I always think that it is too good to pass up. I think I have worn a new shirt everyday this month! Embarrassed
  • Since shopping in general is anathema to me, I don't have this problem. If I need it, I buy it online, and if I can't get it there, I get in and out of the store as fast as is humanly possible.
  • We like to go to stores for fun and most of the time end up with something that we found on sale.  Most of the time though, my husband will say he's going to buy something, carry it around the store, then say "I don't need this" right before it's time to checkout.  Then I feel bad for getting something and I end up putting it back too.

  • Oh yeah, I love to walk around stores!  I love deal hunting so if I notice something is on clearance (but not priced cheap enough), I kepe it on my radar and keep going back to check to see if it's cheaper! :)
  • Sometimes I go once a week just to get out of the house and get some excercise. Normally I don't spend money but this last time I went out I bought DS some clothes for next winter that were on clearance 70% off so I started searching the other stores in the mall for clearance for stuff for next year. So I felt justified in spending the money cause next winter I won't have to pay full price :)
