Solids and WCM

This WCM transition has me a bit freaked out. We're not where we should be with solids yet, so I'm hesitant. I just read a 1 day "sample menu" of what a 1 year old should be eating and now I'm panicking. I always imagined just replacing formula meals with WCM meals, but now I'm reading that they shouldn't have more than 24oz WCM and even that is considered a lot.

For those who have already switched - did you just switch out the contents of the bottle/sippy, or are you now feeding your child 3 meals a day plus snacks and milk as a beverage?

If you haven't switched - when will you? and what is your game plan?

  • Here's the sample menu I found:

    https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/feeding-nutrition/pages/Sample-One-Day-Menu-for-a-One-Year-Old.aspx?nfstatus=401&nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3a+No+local+token

I feel like my house will be a grocery store with having to keep that many different foods in stock at a time... cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt, fresh veggies, toast, sandiwch meat, cheese, regular meat, pasta, and milk.  It was so much easier when I could just give her purees a couple times a day :p

  • We never did a transition. I've just introduced stuff and she's either liked it or not. I've been letting her self wean from the bottle. She still gets a bottle of formula when she wakes up and before naps/bedtime (it's hit or miss how much she takes or if she take it at all. At meal time she gets a sippy with WCM, EBM or water. She's more interested in eating than drinking though. She gets 3 meals and 2-3 snacks a day.

  • W gets 3 meals, 2ish snacks a day too.

For example a normal day for us is:

Wake up 1 8 oz bottle of 1/2 WCM 1/2 Formula and a piece of fruit. Lots of bananas lately. If I dont do fruit I do oatmeal.

Snack of cheerios around lunch time.

Lunch, cheese quesidilla, or part of whatever I am hacving.  Bottle of 1/2 and 1/2 before nap.

    Snack, Puffs or cheerios.

Dinner, whatever we are having, within reason. Last night she had spaghetti and green beans.

1/2 and 1/2 bottle before bed.

  • I'll add that when I started a few weeks ago doing real meals for her and not just winging it or during puree's, I made a serious shopping list. Usually I just get staples and have lots of cereal or microwave meals for dinner if its just me.

Now I plan ahead for meals and stuff that she can eat two days in a row, or that I can freeze for a variety. It was kind of tricky at first, but now I think we are all eating better at home.

This sounds a lot more reasonable than what I found. Thank you! Now, I just have to get DH to not eat the stuff I buy for DD.

  • I was a little nervous because I don't think Shiloh is "there" with finger foods yet either (some she likes, some not so much, she doesn't take in a lot of volume or wild variety, and she mainly gets her fruits and veggies by sucking down the pureed pouches like they are juiceboxes).  But the pedi basically told me to not judge what she takes in by the day, but by the week.  Some days she will eat a lot, other days barely anything, but a kid will not "not eat" to the point of starvation.
  • Wake-up: Sippy with WCM, then breakfast.

Breakfast: 1/4 banana, with one of the following...oatmeal with pureed fruit & yogurt, toast with pb & pureed fuit, egg w/ cheese, occassionally a cereal bar.

Lunch: Usually leftovers, but if there are none that she'll eat then I'll make raviolis, grilled cheese, perogies, etc.  I'll throw in a piece of banana if there aren't enough veggies in the meal.

Snack: Cheese, crackers, puffs, pretzels, etc.

Dinner: Whatever we're eating or one of the lunch items above.

WCM I'll give throughout the day and before bed.

  • DS has 3 meals a day and 2 snacks.  He gets WCM at meal times in a sippy, and water if he's thirsty between meals.

He's been eating 3 meals a day for awhile, so we just added the snacks when we switched to WCM.  I just gave WCM to him in a sippy one day at lunch and he loved it.  So we finished up his formula at his morning and bedtime bottles.  Once we finished the formula, I offered milk in his bottles instead but he refused to drink milk out if it.  So he gave up his bottle feedings on his own.  That's when I added a little more food to each meal.

Breakfast - Either a piece of toast or one pancake with fruit

    Snack - cheerios or puffs

Lunch - Usually leftovers from dinner with a fruit or veggie, sometimes both

Snack - crackers and cheese, cottage cheese, or yogurt

Dinner - Whatever we're having but I make sure there's a veggie with it.

We definitely eat healthier and I cook more now that DS eats what we eat.

I am noticing this shift in our house too!  :)
  • She's still on boob milk but I offer 3 meals and snacks through the day... basically, whenever I eat whatever I eat I offer her some.  I've noticed that her appetite ramps up during the day, too.  She'll eat literally 3-5 chex for 'breakfast' and then last night she ate 3 curried broccoli florets, a couple shrimp and half a spring roll for dinner.  So, I don't try to hang my nutritional hat on her breakfast or first snack.

I buy 1-2 kinds of fruit and 2 veg and just use those all week to avoid feeling like a grocery store.  This week I went crazy and got tomatoes, lettuce and broccoli, plus pears, mostly because we had chili and tacos this week, and I have to have tomatoes in my tacos.  I've also been getting green onions a lot, but she'll eat anything with those on and they're usually like $.50 a bunch so meh.  I keep some sweet potatoes, potatoes and onions on hand most of the time because they keep for a really long time in dark & cool.

  • I started offering WCM at 11 months in the sippy only. I haven't given a bottle in months and I didn't want to go back to that just to have to wean off of something else in a few months. I still nurse 4 times per day but he gets WCM (or sometimes water) after every meal and snack.

I started adding snacks within the past week or so. Here is a sample day:

Breakfast - oatmeal (2.5 oz with 2 oz WCM) and 1/2 banana. Then he'll eat either all of most of the other 1/2 of the banana as a finger food. WCM in sippy.

    Nurse before nap.

Snack after nap - 1 slice of peach or apple, sometimes also 1-2 pieces of cheese, WCM or water in sippy

Lunch - sweet potato pancake (recipe from wholesomebabyfood.com & the freeze well) and 2 - 4 oz of yogurt (YoBaby), WCM in sippy

Snack mid-afternoon - puffs or fruit or those cheese doodle things and/or cheese, WCM or water in sippy

    Nurse

Dinner - piece of chicken (not a huge fan), 1-3 whole wheat cracker, cheese, 1-2 veggies (lately broccoli and peas). Or he'll have some of what I make for us, WCM in sippy

Nurse before bed & then again between 3 and 5am

I've noticed JT doesn't mind when I freeze and reheat so that's basically what I do. He's so picky about what he likes and doesn't really prefer trying new things. I buy frozen peas in the steam bag - make the whole thing, refreeze, and use til it's gone. Steamed Broccoli, Steamed Carrots, baked apples, baked peaches, baked pears, pancakes, blueberries (although he won't eat them anymore) all freeze well. And he'll have anywhere from 5 - 10 oz of WCM in any given day so far.

Oh also, my pedi told me that if they have 1 - 2 tablespoons combined of food during 1 meal that's great. No more than 16 - 20 oz of WCM in any given day. And make the food colorful. HTH

  • Wow - you are all so consistent on what you give your LO for meals.  Breakfast and snacks are the only things we really have down.  Sometimes I give 'real food' for lunch and supper other days I cheat and give baby food (yes I need to break that habbit pronto).

Breakfast is usally a cup of YoBaby yogurt and either a few mini pancakes or some crackers.

Snacks are either some kinds of Gerber Graduate snack, cheerios or slices of fruit.

He will only drink water from the sippy.  He refuses formula/WCM from the cup.  We are down to 2 bottles of WCM a day (14-16 oz total) which I give one after lunch and one at bedtime.

Yes -I have a lot of bad habbits to break.

If I could get away with that, I totally would!! JT is just not havin' it and hasn't for a while...bleh.
