Goes to sleep fine, but wakes all night

My son (5.5mo) goes to sleep fine on his own. I nurse him around 7:30/7:45, rock for a couple of minutes, and then lay him down awake (in his magic sleep suit and with pacifier).  Without fail, he is up 45 minutes later (I just do a paci pop here).  He then is up again about 4 more times throughout the night. I don't feed him every time time, about half I do though.  We haven't done any sleep training, and I'm hesitant to as he falls asleep on his own. Would sleep training (I'm reading the Ferber book, which is what I would implement if we go down this path) even work in this scenario where he goes to sleep fine, but just wakes a lot?  It seems that most people let their babies fuss/cry at the beginning of the night, but that's not our issue.  He's a big boy, around 18lbs, so I'm not worried about him eating. Although, I think he does take in a lot of calories at night because he's so busy during the day and doesn't love to stop and eat. (For example, he doesn't even want to eat when he wakes for the day).  I don't really know what I'm getting at here, but I'm tired! Any advice would be amazing. (This is especially all a bummer because he only woke once a night to eat from 6weeks to 11weeks!)

    Our 5.5mo also falls asleep fine then wakes probably anywhere from 3 to 5 times in a night...we'll feed him, rock him, and he always goes back to sleep. T is very tall for his age and in average weight so I guess he's a big boy too. From what some friends have said, this is completely normal for an almost 6 month old. Some of us get "lucky" and their LO's sleep through the night from early on. Mostly though, I was told I can (hope) to expect it more around 7 to 9 months old. Hang in there, Sista' Big Smile

    I don't have a ton of advice, just letting you know that I am sorta in the same boat. I am also reading the Ferber book and trying his training since I have heard great things about it. We are struggling bc my LO is just starting to go in his crib. If we get him down, its like 45 min. later that he's awake(more like he took a nap and then he just rolls his head side to side and can't seem to soothe himself. We end up bringing him in the bed for the remainder of the night bc he sleeps great there. I wish he would stay at least three fourths the night in his crib but we are not even close. Good luck to you and hope this works out for both of us.

    Sigh, nice to know people are in the same boat! It can be very frustrating, but he is only a baby once.  However, I would like a little more sleep for both of us!

    No advice either but can totally empathize.....baby is 5.5 months and still doesn't sleep through the night. Last night she hit her record, waking up 5 times and then at 4am for the day!!!!!!! But I will add all of you to my prayers for a good night of sleep Big Smile

    I am in the same boat too, only I did the Ferber method for bed time and so now he is where your LO is, putting himself to sleep, but waking tons. When this all started he was waking up once or no times at all, for months. I decided that due to developmental changes that I felt best maintaining night feedings as needed until he was on more solids, around 6 months, but do plan to implement Ferber for night feedings as well if needed. I agree with the Ferber book, you can wait and get lucky, or you could wait and end up having to intervene anyways, there is no saying they will grow out of it with time. In the end, you have to be happy with your decision, whichever you choose. GL!

    My LO is 4.5 months and we are in the same boat too.  He goes down pretty easy around 8:30-ish and stays out until 12-1am, then he's starving, his starts a cycle of not really waking up but very couple of hours grunting, fidgeting, and starting to wake. I usually pop his paci in and get him back to sleep but we do this several times a night. I'm trying to wean the 12-1am bottle and started this week dropping it an ounce at a time hoping to increase his day time appetite.

    Far be it from me to suggest that anyone go against anti-SIDS guidelines. But... when we started putting DD on her tummy to sleep (at about 5.5 mos like your LO) she started sleeping much longer stretches. She still does get up once or twice a night, but never wakes up every hour like she used to.

    We are also in the same boat.  My LO is almost 5 months.  She goes down just fine, but is up between 30 minutes to an hour later.  Then it is such a struggle to get her to go back to bed for at least a couple of hours.  She typically wakes up 2-3 times a night after we get her to sleep the 2nd time. I do not have any advice, but wanted to let you know that I understand where you are coming from.

    I agree about the stomach sleeping.  Our LO started flipping over onto his stomach on his own at 5 mo to sleep at night and he sleeps for longer periods and fidgets much less.  He is 5.5 mo now and only wakes for one feeding each night and makes it through with occasional binky insertions on our part.  Dr. says if baby is capable of rolling over on his own and puts himself in that position, that it is safe and not to worry.  He has the strength to move positions if necessary for proper breathing at night.  Has made our sleep so much better now!

    Our LO now goes to sleep fine (thanks sleep training) and we also want to work on the night waking although she is now only waking 1-2 times (instead of 3-4) and some of that I think was helped by the bedtime training.

    However, she is far from consistent but we know she can go till 1am maybe 2 so we are trying to work on that.  Per Ferber's suggestions we've started adding 30 min to when we'll feed her at night based on her longest stretch.  So we started with 3 hours and we're up to 5.  If she wakes before then we let her cry and use the graduated intervals to check in.  It seems to be helping.  I'm not trying to get her to sleep through 8-10 hours but if we can consistently only get up 1-2 times or just once that would be great

    My LO is the same.  Or should I say WAS - we just moved her room, switched it with the guest room.  The guest room was warmer.  I think LO was just cold at night!  I was surprised b/c she was in a onesie, footy PJs, and a sleep sack.  One night, all we had were fleece options, so we layered her up in fleece and she slept so awesome!  LIGHTBULB!  We decided to switch rooms and she's been sleeping awesome since.

    The only other thing I can think of is that he seems to have daytime and nighttime mixed up?  Do you do a nighttime routine?  How is it different from naptime rountines?  Also, maybe feed him at each wakeup but for shorter and shorter times, instead of only feeding him at some wakeups.  It's like the lottery - he'll keep waking up if he thinks he's going to win!  WIth the shorter feedings, he may not think they are worth it after awhile.

    DS is the same way. I started the Ferber method 3 days ago but it seems like it may be working.  In the mornings when I am awake but an hour before he is suppose to get up, The last two days he has cried for 10 seconds but quoted down before I get to his room.  So since he only woke once last night maybe he did that a time or two.  Or it could just be random-- hard to tell.

    @jlSimon

    His room is warm and the sleep suit keeps him warm as well, so I don't think that's it.  And we definitely have a whole night routine - bath, goodnight moon every night, nurse with lights off and sound machine on.  I'm sure we'll get there eventually!
