did anyone not gain enough weight while pregnant?

my sister is pregnant and was told today that she is not gaining enough weight. she is tiny to begin with and has only gained 2 lbs at 19 weeks. the dr is making her drink ensure drinks and have weight check-ins. did this happen to anyone else? she is pretty concerned =(

Re: did anyone not gain enough weight while pregnant?

  • With both of my pregnancies I gained very little weight before 20 weeks (less than 5 pounds).  With my second pregnancy I had only gained 2-3 by then.  I would wonder why the concern?  Did she have her anatomy scan yet?  Is the baby measuring normally?

  • Did she lose any weight during the first trimester from morning sickness? Some women can lose quite a bit of weight in the first tri, which leads to a net weight gain in the longer run that seems small.

  • A lot comes into play here.

Was she considered a normal and healthy weight prior to getting pregnant?

Does she have any kind of condition that is preventing her from gaining?

What is the goal her doctor has set?

My goal was to stay betwene 20 and 25 pounds, I never hit the 20 pounds but I also lsot 14 pounds in my first 1.5 trimesters because I had hypermesis gravadium and really struggled to even consume anything let alone enough to gain.

The baby is gonna take what it needs, regardess of how much she eats.  If she has an eating problem that could be a factor.  I remember freaking out around 24 weeks and only being up 5 pounds.  My doctor was completely unconcerned.  She kept reassuring me that he was growing perfectly and was doing just fine.  I was not hurting him by gaining so little.  Some people just don't gain a lot.

I think she should have a heart to heart with her doctor and if she doesn't like what she hears...find a new doctor.

  • the baby will get what the baby needs. trust. I lost 40 pounds this pregnancy (I ended up needing emergency surgery and have 20ish put back on in the hospital with fluids), but the baby had been measuring perfectly fine. Even with me physically unable to eat or drink for nearly a month.

I've only gained ~2 pounds since the surgery and no one is worried about it.

Some doctors are just over concerned with numbers.

I agree checking how her ultrasounds are looking, that's a better indicator than the scale.
