Question from Nov mom re: summer baby

Hi Ladies

I had my LO in November and plan to go on holiday with him when he is three months old to a really warm climate.

Can you give me any ideas on how to keep him cool, what clothes to pack for him etc?  Did you have your 3 month old in a pool at all?

Thank you for your help!

  • I agree with PP.  You may also want to offer BM or Formula a bit more frequently to keep him hydrated.

By the way, your LO is adorable!

  • We also kept a wash cloth and a water bottle handy and wiped his head down frequently.  I live in Texas and it was over 110 degrees for what seemed like the entire summer. We went out in the am and pm and hid in the heat of the day. Also I wish we had had a lighter weight stroller. Having him in the car seat was TOOOO hot.  I ended up laying the seat of our BOB all the way back and laying him in it.

  • You can put sunscreen on him, just find one that has titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as the active ingredient, not avobenzone, dioxybenzone or oxybenzone.

Make sure he has a hat and plenty of shade and like PP said, offer BM or formula to keep him hydrated.

We had DS in the ocean at around 4 months - the water was nice and warm and he loved it. Just make sure to change him into dry clothes when you are done in the water so he doesn't get chilled or uncomfortable.

  • We had DD in the pool this summer.  We did use sunscreen on her.  I recommend California Baby sunscreen for LO.  It's safe for all age babies.  I also recommend a hat in the sun.

    Have fun!

  • You can use sunblock not sunscreen. A block is like a pp said with a physical blocker like titanium dioxide. But be careful, some screens are mislabeled as blocks. I had this approved by a pedi and a derm. We got DS a good hat, kept him in the shade when possible, but used Neutrogena Pure and Free (I think that's the name) Sunblock when it couldn't be avoided. I offered the breast more frequently to help avoid dehydration. We took him to the pool all summer. He didn't really care about it at three months, but my pedi had no problem with him going in the water. Also, DS wore a swim shirt (also called a rash guard) which had something like SPF 50.

  • We took our little guy to the beach when he was 2.5 months. my post is here

Like others said, our pedi approved us using sunblock (we used neutrogena pure & free). I also found a good, big hat and sun shirts for him with spf. I did take him in the pool and also bought a peapod that we used on the beach.

    GL and have fun :)

Our pedi approved sunblock as well....he said the possibility of your baby getting a sunburn was far, far worse than any issues with using sunblock when under 6 months old. Make sure to get that stuff everywhere, in every little nook and crevice and roll!
