If you did it, can you recommend the book/dvd you used to get started.

Re: Baby sign language

  • We started at 6 months with some basic signs (milk, more, done). And kept repeating them consistently when talking to DD...slowly adding more signs as we learned them. She started using some of them consistently around 9 months, and they were a real help until now when she'd had her word explosion (though we still use some signs like please, and thank you). It definitely helped her communicate and lessened frustrations.

Don't buy a book...it's really not worth it.I used these online dictionaries far more.

  • Baby Einstein has a Baby's First Signs DVD. We also had a set we bought at Target that came with a video and flip book of signs. I think it was called Signing with Baby or something close, it was in the book section.

  • We did about 10 signs on our own, then used Baby Signing Time at about 14 months, then Signing Time. They are available at the library.  We also liked listening to the accompanying CDs of music

Be careful of some of the other book at the library.  They show made up signs, not ASL.  The Signing Time series uses ASL. It is also now back on PBS.  I think Saturday mornings.

Her sign language exploded about 15 months adding about 5 signs a day.  It was sometimes hard to keep up. When she started talking more, she started with words she didn't know the sign for.  She still signs things and we use it to communicate in loud places or when we are across the room from each other.

This! I received a baby signing book that had made up signs. We use an ASL-based program that utilized flash cards. It was great for sticking them around the house to help use remember signs and when to use them. I still have the bathroom one up on the bathroom door because it helps guests find the loo. :)

  • We also have baby signing time. I got a whole set on babysteals it came with 4 dvd, 4 cds with songs that were on the dvds, flashcards and books. We have had the set for about a month although I have only shown her the 1st & 2nd volume of the dvds. She can sign almost all the signs on the dvd and she is almost 14 months old. I was very surprised how quickly she learned them. She loves the dvds and cds. She knows the signs for baby and time and so she asked for baby sign time all day long

  • We didn't use a book but we did do signs.  I taught her more, please, thank you. They were enough to help her get her thoughts through. :-)  Try your library.
