I want [DH] to do some basic shelves on one of the playroom walls to store toys, etc. Has anyone done these? Or is IKEA the best way to go? I'm getting ideas off of Pinterest but thought I'd ask here too.
Funny that you should ask.....I just finalized the design of some that DH is going to build me in the next few weeks.
They will look very similar to the Expedit bookshelves that you can buy at IKEA, except that they're going to have 4 doors on them bc for some reason, DH can't stand to see the baskets of toys. I wanted him to just get over it but marriage=compromise. Sigh.
He's quite the carpenter, so keep that in mind--I don't think they'd be very easy if you/DH aren't familiar with wood work or don't have the right tools. The expedit is pretty dang cheap--requires (what is sure to be hours of) assembly, of course.

It's not that bad. I did ours by myself I'd about 30 minutes. The hardest part was getting it out of the dang car.
ditto! They are really quick to put together actually.
Even better! That's what I'd do then. In fact, I wish I could go do it right now instead of waiting on DH to build something, which he is just dead set on doing....in all the free time he does not have.
I'm a big fan of our Ikea Expedit system. I bought cute PBK pastel colored bins to go inside some of the shelf compartments. It's surprisingly durable. We've had it for almost 3 years now and moved it across the country, and it still looks pretty much brand new.
