adoption agencies?

I posted this on the adoption board but I thought someone here might have some local info for me. I'm trying to help a woman with a 4-month-old daughter figure out her future.

This young woman, who was formerly employed by a friend, called us for help a few days ago.  Her boyfriend ended up in jail, and she has nowhere to go. After checking with the local women's shelters (all full), we set her up in a trailer on our property in the country.

It's a classic conundrum - she can't work without child care, and can't pay for child care without a job. She said has thought about adoption but her boyfriend wanted to try to raise her themselves.

This girl is 21 years old and not too bright. I know she will listen to whatever advice I give her, so I want to be able to point her in the right direction.

Thanks for reading!

Re: adoption agencies?

  • I was adopted through the Methodist Mission Home in San Antonio.

  • My DH was adopted out of Edna Gladney in Fort Worth.

  • It's been a while, but my aunt and uncle used Edna Gladney.

  • I highly recommend having her call Adoption Advocates here in Austin.  The birth-mom social workers are absolutley amazing and will help her come to a decision that is best for everyone involved.  They can not and will not sway her one way or the other but they will counsel her to help her make the best decision.  I have met several birth-moms who have gone through AA (some who went with adoption and others that didn't) and all of them can't say enough good things about the orginization.  When you call ask to speak with Rory or Janie.  Good luck.
  • My BFF was also adopted via Edna Gladney.  I know there are also lots of families that will pay for all the expenses for a private adoption too. Not sure if she'd go that way but that's an option too.
  • DH and I have investigated Edna Gladney and been pleased with their operation but we only know the adoptive parents side of it.  Good for her for wanting to give her child the best life possible and even considering adoption.

  • I would encourage her to talk with a local caseworker so she can meet in person whenever she wants rather than Gladney or Methodist. I'm partial to Lutheran Soc Services bc I worked there and think the staff are wonderful, but I like the pp rec of A doption A dvocates too.  I trust Rory.

  • Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I am going to get her in touch with Adoption Advocates.

  • She should check out Texas Workforce. I believe they will pay for childcare while a parent is looking for a job. That is, if she decides she would like to keep her baby.

  • If she decides to keep the baby she should check out Texas Baptist Children's Home in Round Rock.  She can live there and she will have a caseworker to help her get daycare, work, and free counseling.  I have referred a lot of clients there.
