Flying with infant carseat

If you've flown with your baby, what did you do with your carseat?  Gate check?  Check at the counter?  Did you take the base?

We have the Chicco Keyfit 30 and are not really sure how to install it without the base.  So last time, we checked the carseat and base (in a carseat bag) at the ticket counter and just carried LO in the Ergo.

But it sure would be nice to be able to keep LO in the carseat in the airport and just push him with a snap n go type stroller and gate check the carseat.  But then what do I do with the base?

Re: Flying with infant carseat

  • I'd learn how to install the seat with a belt.  It should be pretty easy.

When your DD is old enough for a convertible seat, you HAVE to get one of these.  It is the bomb.  I love it.  Really pricy for a piece of plastic with rollerblade wheels, but so worth it!

  • We did not take the base the last time we flew with it and just took the carseat with the Snap N Go through security and checked them both at the gate. We have the same car seat and It's pretty easy to install without the base. We read the manual and also looked up some videos online. Good luck!

Ditto this. This is what I did when I traveled with DD#1 as a baby.

  • Ditto pp about installing the seat without a base. It should be possible. I definitely prefer flying with our carseat on the plane, especially for a longer flight.

Yes, this thing is awesome. You may be able to find a very nice friend who has one and lets you borrow it occasionally. Big Smile

    heheheh...  :)

  • Thanks everyone.  I'm going to try putting out carseat in without the base and see how hard that is.  I'm also borrowing a snap and go because I'm not completely comfortable gate checking our BJ City Select.

I will definitely look into that Travelmate thing for when we move to a convertible carseat.  I've seen those in the airport before and think they are a great idea.
