Repost from 3rd tri, breast feeding laws

I have been meaning to post this for a while but I keep forgetting. Lately some of my girlfriends from back home (FL) have been sharing stories on facebook about women being harassed in public for breast feeding. For example, a women in a Target decided to sit down in between clothing racks to nurse her child. A young female employee came over and told her she could not do that there. The woman refused to stop mid-feeding and it resulted in the girl becoming increasingly rude and store management asking the woman to leave. Now personally I would have gone in the dressing room or something but this woman had rights. Here is a link to what your rights are in every state. Breast feeding mommies have LAWS that actually protect them, so know what they are!!!! check it out below. this is from national conference of state legislatureshttps://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=14389

I live in Virginia, and we definitely had some issues at my office building for nursing mothers who needed to pump during the work day. There were no meeting rooms that had locks on the doors and despite having reserved the room, one of my co-workers was walked-in on while she was pumping!

After that, she researched the law and reported the problem to HR.  They acted very swiftly to provide a secure and private place for pumping and we now have a "wellness room" complete with a workstation, locks on the door, and a comfy chair.

Just an FYI as a fellow VA mama  - Virginia is one of the states that exempts breast feeding from the indecency laws. So if anyone tells you that you cannot breastfeed in public because you are indecent - call BS.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • Perhaps a wonderful idea to print out a few copies & keep in your diaper bag with the laws for your state highlighted, just in case.........

  • Thank you!!  I didn't know about the jury duty thing in California.  Although last time I had jury duty I called and said I am a SAHM and have no one to watch my child and they excused me for 2 years!  I guess if they can do that it makes sense to do it for breast feeding.

  • I completely support NIP however I'm not sure I support someone sitting in a clothing rack to do it. Especially at a Target where there are restrooms and dressing rooms. As a mother who plans to nurse in public I wouldnt want to stumble upon anyone siting in a clothing rack, let alone someone breast feeding in one.

Please dont start this again on this post. The point of this post is to inform women that regardless of  where they choose to bf, they have laws that protect them against harassment  and indecent exposure charges.

Sure maybe sitting on the floor was not the best choice, but the store had NO legal right to approach her as they did. Ya'll are judging her just like those employees did.

I didn't realize it had been "started" elsewhere. If the point of your post was to share breast feeding laws then why mention this story of a women likely making NIP more difficult for other women by doing what she did?

Not trying to be snarky, but without knowing all the details of the story, that's what it sounds like to me.
