Questions to ask Homebirth Midwife

So I am considering a homebirth. I called my insurance and they said as long as she is licensed that everything is covered! So now I need to decide if this is the route we want to take and I want to be prepared with questions to ask. I am not sure how my DH is going to react when I tell him that I am seriously considering this. I am hoping that he will be at least open to the idea of meeting with her to see if this is something we want to do.

So I need some good questions. I am drawing a complete blank so I would appreciate all the help I can get. Thank you!

Re: Questions to ask Homebirth Midwife

  • I think I just did a search for midwife interview questions online.  The main things you really want to know are their transfer rates (and why some of those transfered to the hospital), their c-section rates, how they handle emergencies (I specifically asked about shoulder distocia (sp?) and cord prolapse).  Also, how late you are allowed to go before they recommend induction (mine said she legally had to transfer me after 42 weeks, but that you have to give the client 30 days to find a new doctor, so the baby would come during the 'transfer' of care).  Also find out what her protocal is for if she doesn't make it in time, if she has a back up midwife and if she has midwife apprentice's with her.  They should have all the statistics.

  • I think that you can ask as you go, that's what I did.

As for your DH, I would bring him along to the appointments and have him ask questions too.  My DH was concerned that a home birth would be very messy and the midwives made him feel better about that.  He was also concerned about possible complications and again, my midwives were very informative.

GL and I hope you get the birth you are hoping for!

  • thank you ladies. Your responses and links were very helpful. So the verdict is that we are going to pursue a homebirth! My DH is 100% on board. I am very excited.
