Will started running a fever yesterday (101.5). He has tons of green snot and is still running a temp today, though it's slightly lower than yesterday's temp. I've never really suffered from cedar fever...could this be what he's dealing with or should I brave the germ-filled sick waiting room of the pedi's office for the green snot/fever combo?
ETA: He's acting completely normal. I wouldn't have even taken his temperature if not for all the green junk.
Re: Cedar Fever or something more?
I wouldn't think this is cedar fever. In all my (lifetime) of experience with allergies, they've never caused a fever. Now, it could be allergies that developed into a sinus infection, which could be the cause of the green snot and fever, but allergies themselves don't cause a fever.
I'm not quick to run to the dr., but the green snot + fever.....I probably would take him in since obviously, there's an infection of some sort.
I hope he feels better soon, whatever it is!
In my experience, cedar fever doesn't have an actual fever associated with it.
(Although that's a pretty dumb name if that is scientifically accurate.)
So if you would take him for those symptoms at any other time of year, you should do the same now. You could also treat the fever and wait and see, or call the nurses line and see what they think.
Thank you guys - that's what I was afraid of. DH suffers from chronic sinus infections and I really don't want Will to have the same!
And what a lame name if cedar fever doesn't actually equal fever!
This. The allergies aren't causing the fever, but they could have led to a sinus infection. I hope he feels better soon!
I agree it could be a sinus infection caused by allergies. I'm almost certain this is what J has right now. He was sneezing a lot after being outside for a long time on Saturday. He then had a fever Monday and Tuesday with green snot. I still did not take him to the doctor though. I know more than likely they will just prescribe antibiotics, which if possible I avoid. I get sinus infections often (especially if I lapse in the allergy meds) and very rarely take antibiotics for them. They will clear up on their own without the antibiotics. I've just been giving J OTT allerga and lots of fluids (when I can! the first day he wouldn't take any). The fever was gone mid day yesterday and he is clearing up now.
Anyway, all that to say yes I would take him the the DR if you want antibiotics. No, if not.
That's good to know - I had no idea! Thank you! Yes, I'd rather avoid antibiotics...and since he's acting pretty normal, I don't think he's in pain or anything, so we'll try to wait it out.
Yeaj, I learned that a few years back. I had always been given antibiotics for them so I took them. Then I started going to this awesome PA and he told me he could prescribe them if I wanted but it was not necessary. So I took the prescription but did not fill it. And sure enough it cleared up on its own. So, now I only go to the DR for sinus infection when it is really bad!
Oh and have him drink LOTS of fluids, it helps a lot. I also avoid dairy when I have one but I don't know if it true that you should.
This is good advice. I'd also use a ton of saline spray (if he was older a neti pot, but that's obviously not practical at his age!) to help thin out his secretions. Mucinex with a ton of fluids may be a good idea, too, to help thin secretions and get them OUT instead of sitting up there exacerbating the infection.
