I saw my doc on Monday $ was given the consent form to read & sign if I wanted a VBAC. I read it but still have not made up my mind yet if I want a RCS or try for a VBAC. First baby was an emergency c-section, & my recovery was not so great. Worst pain ever in my life. My question is for those who have had a VBAC, how did u guys decided on that choice? I would really like to attempt but have no support from my mom or husband. My mother stated that I will not be able to handle labor or push baby out, husband said it is up to me but he prefer I do the RCS. I am afraid of the 1% chance of complication and then ending up with a RCS.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank u ladies.
Re: Need help
I bet everyone who makes this decision has a different reason, or set of reasons, why they made that decision. And everyone who decides to have an RCS has their own reasons too.
Regardless of how you give birth, the chances are extremely good that you and your baby will be fine. There's a risk either way and there are benefits either way. So this is just about you and what you're comfortable with. My advice would be to articulate why it is you want a VBAC and what it would take to make you comfortable with that. Can you do it on your own? Or with a doula? Or do you NEED your husband on board? Everyone is different about this stuff.
What was important to me was having a short recovery time, because I knew my two-year-old would not understand why Mommy can't play with her, pick her up, etc. After my VBAC, I was able to bend over, pick her up, and pretty much be myself right away. I knew I might end up with a c/s anyway, but I felt that if I didn't try, I would always wonder.
I want a VBAC so I can recover quickly and not try to make my clingy DD understand why I can't pick her up etc.
To improve my odds even though I'm not pregnant yet I'm doing yoga videos on podcasts that focus on opening the hips. I'm seeing a chiropractor as well to make sure things are properly aligned as well.
I'm going to see an OB with a good VBAC rate and hire a doula when the time comes to encourage my chances too.
Read the ACOG journal article posted below about the risks of RCS and show it to your H and Mom.
To me I'm ok if I end up back in a RCS after laboring but I want to give a VBAC everythingnI got.
This! Exactly!
I agree with what pp's have said. I will add that my family and DH were not initially supportive. But, with thoughtful discussion and reading, they have come to understand the risks, benefits and my wishes. Give them time to come around.
I would rather try and fail, then not try at all. Around 67% of women who try for a VBAC are successful.....you could definitely be in that majority.
I personally would sign the paper for a VBAC....you can always change your mind pretty much up until the moment the baby comes out the old fashioned way. So, it doesn't hurt to sign it now.
Thank u ladies for all your feedback & advice. I will follow my heart & try for a VBAC, if it ends up in RCS, at least I try and give it my best.
The risk to your baby in doing a trial of labor is tiny and the both of you will be monitored closely. The risk of your babies losing you due to the risks of a RCS are higher though still not that high (see ACOG Article below on risks) and that would be awful for them so it's not selfish to do what you are comfortable with and is likely best for all of you.
If things start to get worrisome there is nothing stopping you from having RCS if it's necessary. Just be sure to get a proVBAC dr who won't scare you into an unnecessary RCS for bad reasons. Oh, and I'm just guessing but was your LO OP or otherwise in a difficult position for delivery? If so check out spinningbabies.com for things you can do during pregnancy to prevent/correct that and get them turned the right way for easier delivery.
