Met with Perinatal Specialist

I met with Dr. B e r r y  yesterday that my OBGYN referred me to yesterday.  I thought they were going to look at my chart and just have me meet with the Genetic Counselor but he wanted to meet with me.  He said that having 2 miscarriages in a year raises an eyebrow though not extremely uncommon but that he wanted to run some tests to just rule some things out.  He's starting me on Provera to get my AF back and ran some blood work and is having me do an HSG (uterine ultrasound I think - said to take advil for cramping? Anyone had one?).  He said sometimes people get pregnant again right after the HSG - no certain reason why other than maybe the tubes open up or something. He said when I get pregnant to call the minute I get a positive and he'll start me on Progesterone and have me take baby aspirin (guess aspirin that helps prevent another type of miscarriage).  He's going to send all of the results to my new OBGYN Dr. N a s h at WPIH that I see on Monday.  AustinAggie - maybe this is why I was on your mind all weekend. =) So yeah, not what I expected but glad to have a game plan.

  • Well, no one could accuse you of having an uneventful week! GL!
  • Aspirin is a mild blood thinner that can help with miscarriage from maternal blood clotting disorders. Sometimes they never even have a name for what's wrong with the mother, just that they miscarry and then don't when they're on aspirin. Easy enough right!?

I had the entire RPL (repeat pregnancy loss) panel done after my 3rd miscarriage. I really had to fight for it since my mc's were all spread out and different 'types' and I'd successfully carried Abby to term. It's what finally revealed my underlying hyperthyroidism. Ironically it was not a direct threat to my ability to carry a baby to term but was definitely something that would have led to HUGE issues long run.

I'm glad that you're finding doctors who you like and are taking charge of getting a baby IN.YOUR.BELLY!! And you know... keeping it there =). It's a tough road cookie but I promise it's so very worth it! I'm so so excited for you. Game on!

  • I had an HSG a couple of years back.  It wasn't painful (I did take ibu before) and I didn't have any blockage.  Based on other discussions I've seen on these boards, for some, it can be really painful.

The tech who did the test said she got pg right after her HSG.

  • Yay for a gameplan!!!  I had an HSG - it wasn't bad.  I did have some cramping afterwards, but nothing terrible.  My RE explaing that the procedure can be diagnostic AND therapeutic - that lots of people get pregnant after simply having it done.  We got pregnant on the very next cycle (although it ended in a loss).  But it happens a lot.  And at the very least, it can tell you if something funky is going on.  Lots of luck to you!

  • Glad you're on the right track!

  • I super big puffy heart Dr. B e r ry.  I had an HSG just last week it was my second-- it was more uncomfortable than I remembered-- very crampy but it's over quickly.  Just remember to breath I held my breath during the cramping and almost passed out.  Embarrassed

He did the blood work panels on me too... be prepared it's like 15 vials of blood!!  yikes.  I hope you find answers.  Fingers crossed for you.

  • Dr. B e r r y was my high risk specialist for both my pregnancies. He's wonderful! I had a different set of issues (not IF related), but I feel that he and his staff are competent and caring.

I'm so happy that y'all have a game plan and my fingers are crossed for a sticky baby for you very, very soon!
