Changing DD's name: Opinon please

similar to the, "do you like your LO's name"- I have been thinking lately of changing DD's middle name. Her name is Taryn Brianne. Piper is a family name and is my middle name. I wanted to name her Taryn Piper, but I thought it sounded like___________, so we went with Brianne- a name liked. Do you think Taryn Piper sounds funny put together? I'll tell you what I think it sounds like later, but I dont want you to hear it and sway your first reaction.

I like the name Piper and think it sounds fine as a middle name, but I do think it's a little strange that you would change it now.

I just never felt like Taryn Brianne was her name. Brianne seems just like a filler. I know it is a little weird, but I figure she isn't quite two, but will live with these names for hopefully many decades to come so why wait? haha I am probably over thinking.

  • I agree that it's kind of strange to change it now, but it's totally up to you. I think Taryn Piper sounds fine-I also think Taryn Brianne is nice.

  • Just have to say that I LOVE her first name (my name is also Taryn Stick out tongue). I do think I know EXACTLY what you think it sounds like (don't want to give it away in case you were still waiting). I got comments sometimes because my last name is a common thing so the way it sounded together was a little funny. However, I don't think anyone would really think that of Taryn Piper. Especially since it's a middle name and not used together as often as first/last. I actually think Taryn Piper is cute, but I also think Taryn Brianne is really cute. If you feel really strongly about changing her name I would change it now instead of waiting later and possibly regretting it.

ETA - and when I DID get comments on the sound of my name I wasn't being teased or anything. It was more like "Oh hey, your name sounds like _____" and that would be the end of it.

  • I like Brianne and Piper, but I prefer Brianne. I think it's very strange to change a child's middle name at this point. It's also usually quite expensive.
  • Changing kids name is a PITA!  I wouldn't do it, unless you absolutely HATED her name, some sort of other extenuating circumstances.

I would NEVER do it for just a middle name.  Anybody barely uses theirs, I doubt most people would even know mine.

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

Yay!! Another Taryn. I love this name so much. It fits DD so well.

    Thanks for all the input.

The sounds like I am refering to is "Tearing Paper"

  • Yep, that's what I figured. If it makes you feel any better my name sounds JUST like tearing *something* and it NEVER bothered me. I especially don't see it being a problem as a middle name. I think no matter what you choose your daughter will LOVE her name, because "taryn" is awesome. Wink

  • It's totally your call, but seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a middle name.

  • When I was born my mom and dad couldn't agree on a girl's name so they finally settled on Kristin.

My uncle (my mom's brother and my mom's best friend) left for vacation the night I was born and when he came back I was 6 weeks old. His friend came with him to visit me the moment they got home and his friend was gushing about how much he loved the name "Krista". My mom was too kind to correct him, but fell in love with the name, so they changed me from Kristin to Krista.

Legally they didnt do it till I was 4, but they started calling me Krista at 6 or 7 weeks.

So....moral of the story--your DD Is little. If you want to change it, go for it!

I agree it's weird to change names at this point...

But why is it expensive? I changed my name when I got married and didn't pay much (new driver's lic)

  • What about just adding in Piper? I think Taryn Brianne Piper would be a nice fit for this situation. As for the cost, I think it's only expensive if you're changing a child's last name because of divorce or something like that. My mom was looking into changing her last name back to her madian name and I think it was around $160. I'm not sure if it would be different for a first/middle name and I'm sure it varies by state. Your name changing when you get married is a different situation.  The county made and error on my marriage certificate and when I called the said that I would have to do a formal name change and appear before and judge and that it can be upwards towards $200 to do that.  So it probably just depends on your state as to what the procedure would be for changing a middle name but like some PPs said its just a middle name but if you want to change it change it

  • I like all of these names (Taryn, Brianne and Piper) but Taryn Piper sounds like "tearing paper."
