After contraceptives...

What was your method of contraception? And how long did it take you to get pregnant once you stopped the contraceptive?

Re: After contraceptives...

  • With DS, we tried right away after being on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for about nine years.  We didn't have time to really try for the first cycle.  I was pregnant on the second cycle.

With this one, we tried right away after being on Lo Estrin for a year.  I used the OPKs from amazon to figure out when I would ovulate b/c I didn't get my period on that pill.  We got pregnant on the first cycle.

  • I was on the pill, but I went off of it three months before my October wedding to loose some weight.  We used condoms regularly (and properly) before the wedding and for seven months afterward.    I got pregnant during the first month we stopped using condoms, so all told it was nearly a year that I was off the pill that we got pregnant.

  • I originally posted this on the TTC community and became pretty deflated quickly! Thank you for all of you responses and hopeful stories/experiences! I have been on Ortho tricylcen Lo for years, about six and we are planning on TTC at the end of this pack! I have been waiting so long for this and am so excited and hopeful!

  • 3rd cycle after going off the pill-after 2 years. Before the pill I took 1 year off all contraceptives because I had come off 5 years of Depo and wanted to give my body some time to adjust before going back on a hormonal birth control.

  • My 1st pregnancy, I was on ortho tri cyclen and ortho tri cyclen lo for about 6-7 years. Then I started yaz and was on that for about 2 years. I stopped 3 months before ttc and used condoms during that time. My cycles were out of whack before ever going on the pill and that's how they resumed. It took me over a year to conceive and did so with clomid.

This pregnancy I was on yaz for about a year after the birth of my twins. Was having trouble with it so I stopped and instead of waiting to ttc like last time, we started ttc right away and the 2nd month I was pregnant.

My only advice, start taking prenatals even before you come off the pill. It's better to have as much in your system before you become pregnant.

  • I was on the pill, YAZ. I went off in mid July and got pregnant in October.

  • During my annual in August, I was able to talk with my NP about our plans. I have now been taking prenatal vitamins since October and am otherwise following the plans that my NP laid out for me!

  • I was on Yaz for over 4 years.  I stopped mid-pack and got pregnant before I got my first unmedicated period (just found out yesterday!).  I was worried that it was going to take forever for my cycle to re-regulate after coming off, but it was only delayed about 3 weeks.

  • mchupie,

You were the first to post on my original post, so I then took your advice and posted on the 1st Trimester forum. I returned to my original post so I could delete it and I had a few more posts from women TTC. The responses and stories that I am reading on this forum are exciting, hopeful, and numerous! Thanks for the advice to repost on here!

I didn't tell you to post on 1st Tri, I think someone else did. Smile I responded and told you that it took us 8 months to get pregnant.

I guess I was just wondering what you meant when you said you were deflated by the responses...

  • With DD, I stopped taking the pill midway through the pack on Jan. 25th and then got a BFP on Feb 26th (I had been on the pill for years before that.) My friend told me later on that it was really unhealthy to have conceived her within a month of being off the pill and that my whole pregnancy was more at risk because of that. She told me this after DD was born, but has anyone else heard of this?

Since having DD, I didn't want to use any hormonal contraceptives so I charted and went by natural family planning, which was then really helpful when we decided to TTC #2.

Sorry, I must have confused you with another poster. Every response that was posted in response to my original post were stories similar to yours, expect you were the only one that had conceived. I am sorry if I offended you. I am worried that I will have trouble getting pregnant once I go off the pill and have read alot and heard many stories of difficulty TTC after years of contraceptive use. I was really glad to hear that some people conceive shortly after stopping their form of contraception. Again, I am sorry if I offended you or anyone else.

You didn't offend me...I guess it's just a little weird to delete a thread when you don't get the responses you were hoping for. Were you expecting everyone to tell you they got pregnant right away?

Keep in mind that it can take up to a year for a healthy couple with no fertility issues to conceive. GL!

I didn't delete that post because I wasn't getting the responses I wanted. Those responses were what I was expecting. I deleted it because someone suggested that it wasn't the best place to post since it was the TTC thread not a thread where the women had already conceived. I guess I should have just left it open. I know it may take awhile to conceive. I am hoping for the best. This was my first time posting on here and I appreciated everyone's responses.

  • We used natural family planning - basically charting to avoid. I stopped charting after I confirmed ovulation in my November 2011 cycle and got pregnant in my December 2011 cycle. So... immediately. Hah!
  • ::butting in:::

I was on the pill.    It took 22 cycles of TTC after the pill to conceive.

Here's the thing about posting on the TTGP board...most of the women are there because its taken longer than one month for them to concieve and most of them havent been pregnant yet, so in turn you probably won't get the "it happend right away!!1!" response you were hoping for.

Of course you are going to get better responses here because these girls are in fact, KTFU.

Everyone is different, no one can really say or guess how long it will take you to get a BFP after coming of birth control.

ETA: The women on TTGP are a GOLD MINE of knowledge so lurking on the board will probably be helpful for you while you TTC. GL!

I couldn't agree more! OP, lurking & eventually posting on the TTGP board will serve you well - the women there have so much information to share. I honestly don't think I would have gotten pregnant so quickly without going on that board and learning about my body and my cycle.

And FWIW, I got pregnant the six weeks after I had my Mirena IUD removed. GL to you!

Hopeful and exciting answers won't help you get pregnant, fyi. Not liking and ignoring TRUTHFUL answers because they are not what you want to hear is pretty childish and will only give you a fake sense of reality.

  • I used a variety of pills and I got pregnant the 1st cycle for 2 out 4 pregnancies.

  • I was on the pill for about 13 years before ttc.  It took 5 months to get pg.  We lost that baby and got pg our 1st cycle trying after that (we did an IUI).  This time around the only bc we were using was BFing, and we ended up getting pg 4 months after my cycle came back without trying at all.
