What crafts do you do with your 2 1/2 y.o (or or younger or older)?

DD is 2 1/2 and I think she would love to do simple crafts at home (she does some at preschool), but I always feel with DS, who is 17 months, it would be hard because he would be eating glue and anything else we use.  We put easel paper on the table and she loves to draw with (washable) markers, but DS gets mad that I only give him crayons, (which he eats anyway) so I give him markers and just wash his hands and face after.

I have pinned a whole bunch of kids crafts on pinterest, many of which seem to involve handprints, but a lot of them I think DS would not enjoy.  I think I need to just suck it up and pick a few things that DS could maybe possibly enjoy.

What kinds of crafts or projects do you do with young kids?

  • C brings home a metric ton of crafts from daycare (most seem to be kits from Oriental Trading), so we don't do much at home. But the kid is bananas for Play Doh. We didn't start using it until he was closer to 2, so it might be to young for your DS yet, but perfect for DD. C just received a little grill kit to go with it, which includes little scissors and molds and what not. He also has a giant pile of plastic cookie cutters.

For your marker problem - you could dry the Crayola Color Wonder markers and paper. They're pricey though.

  • I'm craft challenged.  I color with DS.  He likes to paint.  He also likes play dough.

  • We didn't really start doing crafts until after age 2 so I'm not really sure what you can do with your DS.

DD loves play-dough with a passion. We got a few of the play-dough sets for Christmas and so she likes making cakes, pizzas, etc. She likes to combine the play-dough play with her kitchen and her "cooking".

As far as crafts, we did a gingerbread house at Christmas. She loved looking at her masterpiece each day. We also made bean boxes. I took the plastic containers from Gerber baby food and we filled them with some beans and then I taped them shut. They can be used as little maracas. I also did a caterpillar off Pinterest which is made out of a half of the bottom of an egg carton. I let DD paint it with finger paints and we also glued little puff balls on it, eyes, and used a pipe cleaner for the antlers. We also color and paint sometimes. So, those are the types of things we do.

  • Another Play Dough lover here. Also, she loves to color. She loves to use markers but it is more for decorating herself (she likes to draw ALL over her arms so I use the washable markers since they are easy to clean up and non-toxic.). And, we got her the large aquadoodle mat for Christmas and it is great since it is just water.

We have not gotten into the paints yet. I worry about the mess.

  • Thanks for all the ideas!  Play dough is a great one that I was missing.  I think I even bought some play dough accessories at a consignment sale awhile back so I will have to dig those out this weekend.  Should be fun!
  • How about things with stickers?  Then DS can join in with minimal mess, you just need to sit there and peel for them.  The foam sticker packs go on sale at Michaels and AC Moore fairly often or you can use a half price coupon as well.  Oriental Trading company has seasonal sticker sets where you get a blank scene and can put stickers on them, like this one or this one, which my girls enjoyed over the holidays.

Also it may be tough in winter but as the weather gets nicer they can paint outside and you can have a small bucket to clean up before they come back inside.

  • Tracy--great ideas!  Thanks!
