Did you dress up a lot as a child? Do you feel like that influences how you view your child wearing/not wearing costumes in public?
I grew up in a home where we dressed up on a daily basis. We had a whole closet of dress up clothes, a lot of which were actually clothes from Goodwill/Salvation Army that my mom had altered. We were pirates, pilgrims, cowboys/girls, anything we could think of. I remember a few months where my younger brother walked around EVERY day wearing his vest, boots, and hat, telling everyone that there was a new sheriff in town. We won't ever let him forget that one.
I don't think I've ever actually outgrown my love of dressing up. I did it well into my teenage years, my sister and I would regularly have large groups of friends over to dress up and preform plays, or have dances and whatnot.
I think that will greatly affect what I let my children do. In my mind, dressing up is a way to use your imagination, so I'll encourage it as much as possible. Of course, there WILL be boundaries. I won't allow a little indian at a nice family dinner. ![]()
This is how I spent a lot of my childhood -

Re: Another costume s/o
We did dress up a lot, but as the clothes were just old clothes of my parents, we weren't allowed out of the house in them. They were ill fitting and we would have stumbled around from place to place.
As far as regular clothes go, my mom sent me to school with "she dressed herself" disclaimers starting in preschool.
