Tax Question for those with 2+ children

Do any of you split up your kids on your federal tax returns (ie. you claim one and your partner claim the other)?

Obv I'll sit down and crunch the numbers to see what makes the most sense for us, but i'm wondering if that works out the best for anyone else.

::insert yearly grumbling about how f-ing redic it is that we have to file 2 seperate 'single' tax returns::

Re: Tax Question for those with 2+ children

  • We each take a kid since we both take out dependent care FSA (this isn't allowed with married couples, but since we aren't married, I'll take this as the only benefit we get.) So we each take a kid and file as singles. Then L takes everything else (house, donations, etc) since she makes more than I do.

  • Well, our adoption isn't finalized yet, so C will claim both this year, but in the future we'll each claim one for the same reasons as 2brides. C also claims the house because she makes more.
  • We both did the FSA so we are each taking one, but we are going to crunch the numbers to figure out if that is worth it going forward or if it makes more sense financially for me to claim them both.

  • We haven't sorted this out yet, and honestly I don't think I'll have the time/patience to do it myself, so we're planning to farm the number crunching out to a tax professional. Smile Good to see what others have done, though; thanks for asking!
