Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

anyone not love their child's name at first?

DH and I have had a very difficult time coming up with a name for our little girl.  We've 95% decided on Elsa Kathleen.  Elsa is one of DH's suggestions.  Kathleen is my MN and my mother's FN.  I've always wanted to use it if we ever had a girl, and DH agreed to it long ago.

I like Elsa, but I don't LOVE it.  Of all the suggestions DH had, it was my favorite.  I kind of feel like I should let DH have this one.  DS is named after both my grandfathers, and now DD will have my MN.  It seems only right that DH be included a little more in this name.

Did anyone use a name for their DC that they didn't love at first?  How do you feel about it now?  I'm wondering if Elsa will grow on me once I have LO and associate it with her.

  • Me. Lauren just seems so grown up. As a NB she didn't look like a Lauren. We called her Lo like from The Hills. It stuck. Now she's Lo, Losey and Losey Posey.

  • My son is a junior and I have never been keen on namesakes. I mean you have 9 months to make a new person, come up with a new name. But DH really wanted a namesake so I agreed. I tried to get people to call him MJ (his initials) but it didn't take...Jake did (for his middle name). Now when people call him by his real first name I just look at them blankly. I'm in total denial that is his name and never acknowledge it unless it's the doctor or school records or something like that. Not a huge fan of his name, but i'm good enough with it.
  • I am totally in love with DD's name. However, if we had gone with the name that DH wanted, I might not feel the same way. I really like the name he wanted, but I wasn't totally in love with it. And now it's really clear to me that that name wouldn't have fit her as well as Helena does.

So I kinda know where you're coming from. Good luck with your decision. For what it's worth, I think Elsa is a really cute name.

  • Eh.  When I was pregnant I loved a short name, let's say Alex (not DS's real name but similar).  Well I convinced myself that "Alex" is a nickname and he needed a full name.  But DH and I didn't like "Alexander" so we picked something less traditional and went with "Alexsei".  While I like "Alexsei" I really wished I had just named DS "Alex"

  • Yep, I totally feel that way about DD's name.  Most of the time now I like it (not necessarily love it), but there are days that I wish I could change it. I have a little extra guilt b/c I loved DS' name from before he was even born, but girl names are just tough for us.  There really aren't any names that I totally love for a girl, and the top choice for me was an automatic veto for DH.

FWIW, I love Elsa.  It's one of the names that I wanted to change DD's name to when she was a couple of months old.  It was the first time I ran across it, and I loved it.  Too late for me though.

  • Like PP I wasn't a really big fan of the junior aspect of it all but I promised that if I ever had a boy then it would be a junior. I do feel kind of gypped because he named DD even and he even gave her my first name as her middle. I have decided that if I have any other children I am the sole naming authority on that kid. I do love DD's name though.

  • I agree that once I had my LO, the name really fit her. When I think of the other names we had picked out, they really dont suit her at all.

I do think that if you arnt toally on board, I would discuss other options with your H

  • We had the hardest time coming up with a name for her. We were going to name her Zoe, and then she didn't look like a Zoe. 13 hours after she was born, we decided on her name. I really hated it at first, but I now associate it with her and it seems to fit her well.

  • I didn't love DD's name at first. I have a very unusual name and I always thought I'd give my kids different names too, but we couldn't agree on any, so she got a classic name. It's really grown on me, and I can't imagine her having any other name.

  • I knew exactly what I wanted for a girl, but had no clue for a boy. So of course I have a boy. H wanted to name him Bran (yes, GoT reference). I said no, it makes me think of bran flakes. In the end we agreed to Brandon. I'm still not crazy about it, but guess whose nickname is Branflake?

  • DH really wanted Gabriel and I didn't like it for months.  Then a week before I was due, he said he decided (we were between Gabe and another name).  Once we started referring to "him" as Gabe, I grew to like it - by the time he was born, I loved it.

  • Not in the same boat but could you just reverse the first and middle names?  Obviously you like the middle name and that way your DH still gets to keep the name he likes but as a middle name instead.

Otherwise if you dont love it keep hunting.  Maybe just go into the big day with a couple options.  Heck when I went into labor (we were team green) we still had 8 girls first names + 3 middle name options, by the time we got to the hospital we were down to 4 but it took us until the day we were taking her home to decide for sure between Charlotte and Piper.  I was seriously on the phone with DH (who had gone home to shower up) saying "Umm so they are coming in in 20 minutes to fill out her birth certificate info with me, we NEED a name.  What's it gonna be?"  In the end he went with my second favorite name (my first was vetoed) and I picked her middle name.  So really it was a win win for me.  hehehe :)

LOL! I love the story of his name, and I heart your DH for loving the character and the series that much :).  I love me some Bran and Arya Stark but have the same issue, it makes me think cereal. But I do love that you took the plunge on it.  Hope your little guy is even half as awesome as he is in the book :)

  • You'll love it because you'll love your baby :) Unless you really dont like the name to start with, I'd keep it.

My niece's name is Elsa and she is the freaking cutest thing EVAH.

  • DH and I bicker soooooo bad about baby names. When I was pregnant we knew what we wanted to name a girl from day 1. We also bickered about boys names from day 1, so of course that's what he had. We couldn't agree on a name until the last month, and DH wasn't 100% sold on it, but he hated it the least of the names I liked. Now he says he couldn't think of Owen being any other name, it just fits him if that makes sense. I'm hoping once baby #2 rolls around, if it's a boy, that I can finally have my baby Liam! I've loved that name since I was in middle school and of course I marry the guy that hates that name....ughhhh.

  • My DS's name is Ryne.

When my DH first suggested it, I hated it! I thought it was the strangest name ever. Then, when I told people on the bump about it, the majority of them bashed it too, and I seriously thought DH was crazy.

We went with it anyway, because it was really important to my DH. I had picked my DD's first name, so I had promised that if we had a boy, he could pick the first name. I picked DS's middle name.

Now? I love the name, and I think it fits him perfectly. I get annoyed that people can't seem to pronounce it correctly, but I also knew that was coming. I just didn't realize how often people would really butcher it. DS has been called Ryan, Renee, Rain and Wren. I just laugh anymore. If we will likely see the people again, then I correct it. If not, then I just don't bother.

How exactly DO you pronounce it?  Does it sound like Rine (rhymes with wine)?  I've always wondered.  Makes me think of the name Rhys as well - I have no idea how to pronounce that one.  Reese?

Sorry OP - nothing to add.  But as a pp said, you will love it b/c you'll love your baby.  Very true I think!

  • I'm kind of the opposite- when we named Anneliese I loved her name. Now, I still like it a lot, but I can think of half a dozen others that I like more and that would suit her better. Oh well. :)

With Hazel, I liked the name a lot and now, I LOVE it. Favorite name ever.

DS is a IV(4th). I was 99.95% aginst it from the moment DH wanted it. His first name is George(old man yuck). His mn is Alexander and we call him Xander and honestly I LOVE that name. My family HATES it want will call him Alexander or Alex just to piss me and DH off.

  • As a total afterthought: While I still don't "love" DD's name, there are still things that I do love about it all the time without wavering.  I love that it's not an overly girly, prissy name...it's just solid.  I love that it's not a commonly heard or totally unusual name either.  I doubt she'll have any other kids in her classes growing up with her name, and it was important to me to try to avoid her being a firstname lastinitial growing up.

  • I love DD's first name. Her middle name- eh- I wish we had gone with a family name.

    Her name is Taryn Brianne

I wish we went with Taryn Piper (family middle name) but I thought it sounded funny.

I agree.  I think if you don't HATE it, when she gets here, you'll grow to love it.  DH mentioned very early on in our relationship that if we had a boy he wanted to name him after his Grandfather.  I didn't love the name, but I didn't hate it either and it was really important to my DH.  We used my dad's name as his middle name.  Once he was here, it just grew on me.  Now, I can't imagine him not being a Vincent.

I love your middle name choice, it's my mother's name also.  I think about using it if we ever have a girl.  Like pp said, can you switch the middle and first name so his name is still in there?

  • DS1 is named Richard.  Talk about a name you have to grow into!  Everyone I ever introduced him to says, "Oh that's my grandfather's name!"  It wasn't even really a choice for me to name him Richard, it's a family name and DH was 100% dead set on it.

It took a loooong time for me to really think Richard suited him, but now I couldn't imagine anything else!

With DS2, I picked a name I 100% adored (Merrick), and it still took a few months for me to really feel like he was a Merrick.  Now it's perfect though!

  • DD's name was not my first or second choice, but DH and I had a very hard time agreeing on names and when he came to me with Adrianna, it was the first name he came up with that I didn't hate  so that is what we went with. It's a very nice name and I like it, but it is EXTREMELY popular around here.  Obviously, after almost 2 years, I just look at her now and her name fits her, and I can't picture her as anything else, but it still bugs me that everywhere I go there is another little girl with the same name.
  • I love my DS #2 name Ian but its a little too popular for my personal preference. But I couldn't find another boy name that I liked as much. It is a name I liked ever since I was a little girl. Just like Isabelle which also because extremely popular recently. I didn't like Warren 100% for a baby but he IS Warren now. (he was named after my husband's grandfather) I can't imagine him w/ another name & I love it. Now that he is even a toddler its fine.

p.s. I love the name Elsa

  • We were team green and had one name for a girl and two names for a boy. His dad was always leaning toward Griffon, and I always preferred Lincoln for a boy.  When he was born I just couldn't see him being a Griffon, but I didn't have the heart to squash his dad's name.  It took us until the third day after he was born to name him, when I finally told him how I felt and he was like "cool, then Lincoln it is!".  Now I love the name and cannot imagine him being anything else, especially not a Griffon.  Now his dad thinks automatically if we have another boy he will be named Griffon, but I think we'll have to wait and see, just like with Lincoln.
