Sleeps all day, awake all night.

I'm at a loss as to what to do with my 4 month old. She's in the beginning stages of teething at the moment, so is more clingy and fussy as well as drooling everywhere and chewing everything. This is having a big impact on her sleep.

She's been a good sleeper from the start, that is, once she actually goes to sleep. Currently she's awake all night and asleep all day, I can't get her to switch round and I'm so exhausted from staying up with her all night that my bodyclock is the wrong way round now too.

How do I get her on the correct day/night schedule and keep her on it?

Re: Sleeps all day, awake all night.

  • The only thing that worked for us was trying to make days more exciting and nights very boring.  We'd go for a lot of walks during the day, go grocery shopping, etc.. and try to keep her awake for a little longer each day.  Then at night even when we were both wide awake I'd try to be as boring as possible, no tv, no radio, nothing interesting.

  • I also would try waking LO during the day, so she is tired at night.  GL!

  • We had the same issue and i was so tired during the day that it was difficult to keep DS up because I needed the nap too.

Is there anyway you could get someone to come help you so that you could get some rest and restart your clock too?

For us we had to be pretty stern in changing DS's sleeping patterns.  Whenever he was awake we had to entertain him and occupy him.  He would start getting sleeping and instead of letting him doze off I played with him, walked with him, bounced, sang anything and tried to get him to stay up for 30 minutes longer.  I initially tried with adjusting in 15 min increments and it didn't help at all.

After I got him to have a decent stretch of awake time I started waking him up from his naps (he was almost 6 months so quite a bit older than your LO).  He would sleep 3 hours in the morning and another 2-3 in the afternoon and then still only need 6 hours at night.  So I started waking him after 1 hour in the morning and 2.5 in the afternoon.  This lasted probably 2 months and finally he decided he wanted to just drop the morning nap and I let him sleep as long as he wanted 1x/day.
