I apologize if this is long. It feels so good to get it all out.
I am so relieved. I met with my MWs mentor today (a homebirth MW who has been practicing for 30 years) because she has lots of experience with versions and also attends breech births.
She agreed not only to try and turn the baby (version), but also that she thinks that if, for whatever reason, the baby does not turn, that I am a good candidate for a vaginal breech birth and has agreed to attend my birth if that is the case.
She said that there is a small elevation of risk with having a breech baby vaginally, however it is not anymore of of a risk than having a c-section. That made me feel really good because although I know my reasons for not wanting a c-section are pure and not selfish, I was still feeling a lot of doubt because of how breech births are typically handled in the US. She also said that Canada has starting to recommend that their OBs consider delivering some breech babies vaginally again instead of going straight to c-sections because the reasons for eliminating it entirely are not supported by science- which I thought was interesting and am feeling hopeful that the US will follow suit- well, maybe someday.
Anyway, we talked about what they would want from from a breech birth and the top three things were- that I progressed a bit more consistently than last time (I was at 6 for nearly 10 hours and 9 for 10 hours LOL), that the heart rate stay perfect (which was the case last time) and that I should try to delay pushing for at least a half hour after I feel the urge so to make sure I am fully dilated. I guess with complete breech (which is what Lily was at the last u/s) one of the main challenges is that you can dilate uneven.
Finally, although I can labor in the tub, I will not be able to give birth in there if she is breech. That is a big one for me to take since the water was so important to my success with the first, but I will give it up any day if it means I can have my baby vaginally.
I am well aware that I could still end up at the hospital with a c-section if we go this route...but I am ok with that (as I would be in any situation that really requires a c-section), however it is nice to know that I don't have to go that route simply because of fear and because I couldn't find anyone with any experience attending these type of births anymore.

Re: What a relief: Breech does not necessarily = c-section in my case
That's great! I'm happy for you and it sounds like you're in good hands.
I had my twins vaginally and the second twin was delivered by breech extraction. I know that's a little different from a singleton breech birth but I wish you the best and hope this goes well for you!

That's awesome! DH was born breech. I'm not sure if it was because his mom was a nurse in the L&D dept or not, but c-section was never even brought up. MIL said she spent a lot of time in labor standing on her head! She's a little out there so I'm not too sure how true that actually is.
Have you ever seen the movie Murder on the Orient Express? There is a character whose makes being born backwards a part of her identity. She says she works in Africa with little babies who were also born backwards. I have no idea what she meant by that, but I thought it was interesting.
Unfortunately, as far as I know, it's illegal for a CPM to deliver a breech baby in my state. I think CNMs can in a hospital with an OB looking over their shoulder and in an operating room. I should do more research on that!
LOL! Can you imagine???
My husband was also born breech. Footlings breech at that! This was before ultrasounds and my mother-in-law kept telling the doctors that his head was up top but they just brushed it off and then when she was dialated all of the sudden they were paniced because there were his feet! He also had the chord wrapped like 3 times around his neck.... I am VERY thankful that baby presentation is not a genetic thing!
Awesome news about the breech vaginal delivery possibility! There is only a couple doctors here (where I am, in Canada) who consider it and they really only consider it if baby seems small enough and is frank breech, but they do consider it individually for every patient!

Started our exploration into the world of international adoption June 2012. We have no idea what this is going to look like but we are excited to find out!
Hey Pink!
This is GREAT news. It wasn't an option in my case as she was presenting as a complete breech and my midwives can't even do versions anymore (I'm sure it is a malpractice insurance issue).
But don't give up hope, lady. We think our girl finally turned. Ultrasound today to confirm. I can't remember. are you pursuing interventions like a chiropractor or accupuncturist? I am getting regular osteopathic manipulative treatments and I KNOW that this helped our girl find the room to flip.
My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy. Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.
That's awesome!!
Can I ask if you tried all the "home remedy" tricks to get baby to flip? I just wanted to share a trick that worked for me when our son flipped to breech at 37 weeks. I rubbed peppermint oil (I found mine at the Vitamin Shoppe) at the top of my belly where his head was. Apparently they don't like the smell of peppermint and try to turn away. I put it on at night before going to bed and the very next morning he was head down again.
I just thought I would share. I know how hard it was for me to accept a c-section (a version wasn't an option fo rme and my dr. did not do breech births) when I wanted a natural birth so badly. I hope something works out for you!! Good luck!
very happy for you!
happier that you posted this here! there are only a few of us on this board (i'm looking at you, texas!) who consistently support vaginal breech birth as an option before automatically going to surgery (under the right circumstances). so i'm really glad to see this post!
I had been waiting for an update from you! This is great news!
When will your midwife try the version?
She wants me to see her chiropractor. I guess they have this relationship where he lines everything up to be an ideal situation and then will call her and say, do the version now! LOL
I have been seeing chiropractors and getting acupuncture done (along with the moxibuston). I have also been doing both the maneuvers on the spinning babies sight. I pretty much have done at least one of these every day for the past two weeks. She has not turned, but she has moved up a bit from my pelvis and has changed position- although not from breech) a couple of times, so I feel like it is all helping. Oh, and I have also started taking homeopathic pulsatilla.
I am seeing the new chiro tomorrow so fingers crossed!
