Sleep Training Check In!! (oh, and good morning. )

Hope everyone had a well rested night! Check in with your sleep training method, routine, how your night went, and any questions you may have. **We follow Weissbluth and keep to a pretty set schedule. ***she went down at 6:45p and woke up at 6:45a. ***Still working on her putting herself to sleep, we are 50/50 on that. ***we really want to take a big trip this spring, and on our last few trips her night time sleep has sucked. Does anyone have any tips for getting babies to sleep well when not in their crib? She doesn't do well in the Pack and Play or with us in the room.

Re: Sleep Training Check In!! (oh, and good morning. )

  • I don't really even know what technique we use to "sleep train".  Last Wednesday, we just decided we were putting Em in the crib awake.  It was HARD. She cried for about 40 minutes.  Every night it's been less. Last night, the 7th night, it was only 4 minutes. She's doing great.  Em sleeps from about 6:30- 6:30.  We have never slept over night anywhere, so I'm sorry that I can't help you.  Maybe if you try just having her nap in different places, she'll get used to not only sleeping in the crib.  Em sleeps fine at daycare too. I don't know if it's a getting used to it thing.  Good luck.

  • We are kind of using our own method of sleep training.  We have been putting D drowsy or even awake but definitely tired for several months now and for the most part he goes down easily.  Our main problem now are the night wakeups and wanting to use me as a pacifier.

Last night he was great!  Despite going down a little earlier than normal (6:45) because of an early last nap, he didn't wake until 3 to eat and then was awake but happy in his crib.  He put himself back to sleep at some point but then was up for the day at 5:30.  I left him in his crib until 5:50.  I'm kind of unsure if there's a way to stretch his wakeup time to later??  Once daylight savings comes it won't be a big deal but I'd rather not be out of bed before 6 if I can help it Stick out tongue

  • We aren't really using a "method" more a combo between whatever Hepcats uses and Ferber. We let him CIO (more a wine than cry) for 5 minutes then pat and shush and repeat. Last night he woke about 2:30 at 3:30 I gave in and fed him and he acted like he was starving and I cried thinking I had been starving my child. We put him down drowsy and he does great I just wish he didn't wake for night feedings but I think I am going to accept a night feeding to not feel as horrible as I do now.

  • Last night was our third night using the Ferber method. He fussed for ten minutes and then passed out, feet sticking out of the crib. Woke up around 2:30 and we checked on him at intervals, but by 3 I was convinced he was hungry so I nursed him. Naps are getting so much better too. Our morning one is about two hours and the afternoon is about an hour or more.

  • We're using Ferber, and he has been doing well - many nights he sleeps all the way til 7:15 and wakes up nice and rested. Ferber says you can keep a night feeding if you want to, and I keep going back and forth about whether I want to keep it if he wakes for it, or try to phase it out. Yesterday morning he woke at 4:30 and I fed him, but then he woke again at 6 am, grumpy, and wouldn't go back to sleep so I took him out of his crib at 6:30. That does not make for an easy morning, he's cranky until his first nap. It seems like that's always the case when he is fed at 4 or 4:30. This morning he woke at 5 and I fed him, and he did great in the morning, woke at 7, happy. He only wakes for night feedings about half the time so I don't really think he NEEDS it, so I guess I'm going to try to phase it out by pushing it 30 mins later, and only feed him if he wakes after 5:30 tomorrow.

  • J got in the habit of needing a bottle to go to sleep when he was sick over christmas and he actually started to reject the bottle last night. which is good and bad. it does mean that we need to do CIO (ferber) but i was hoping to wait til next week since DH will be able to help.BUT he only woke up 2x last night compares the 5-6 of previous nights.

  • For the second night in a row, at 8pm I was able to put Julia in her crib awake but drowsy after our bedtime routine (yeah!). She woke at 1am and I nursed her and she went back to sleep right away, she woke again around 4:45am, and I let her fuss/cry for about 30 minutes. She fell back asleep on her own and slept until 6am. Since it had been about 5 hours since she last ate, I fed her again and laid her down. She slept until 8am and was a happy baby when she woke. I'm hoping to continue to stretch out the night feedings, maybe 5.5 hours tonight....

  • We are using Ferber and it's been going great!  He goes to bed about 645 and the last two nights have been NO TEARS!!!  Last night he slept until 330 and woke screaming so I got him up and feed him.  Sadly I didn't put him back in his crib when he was done as we both fell back to sleep.

I'm having a really hard time for naps.  He just screams in there and refuses to go to sleep.  Any times there?   I'm doing Ferber for that too but it's just been rough.

  • Ferber comes tomorrow so I'm not technically "sleep training" yet, but I'm starting to apply some of the tactics (putting to bed tired but awake mainly).  He started getting tired earlier than normal last night, which of course irritated me because I figured he'd be up at 11:00, but he went right down at 8:15 (30 minutes earlier than normal).  He woke at 8:45 but just to let out a few cry's and then fell back asleep (we were FINALLY moving the tree out of our living room and I'm sure that startled him.)  He didn't wake again until 4:30 for a bottle.  Considering it was 8.5 hours since his last bottle we figured it was OK to feed him.  He went right back down and woke again at 6:30 as I was getting up.  I gave him his paci, turned on his Twilight Turtle and gave him a toy so he could play while I got ready before I needed to get him ready.  Surprisngly he entertained himself!  Whether or not he fell back asleep I'm not sure, but he was wide awake at 7:00 when I went in.

    Overall, good night!

  • We had a weird night last night. DH puts DD to bed since I do all of the "training" during the day and overnight. He put her down at a few minutes to 7 pm (her usual bedtime). He took his position in the middle of the room (doing the Sleep Lady Shuffle from GNST), but he ended up just leaving her in there alone b/c she was rolling back and forth and "talking" to herself. She did that for about 30 minutes and then we peaked in her room and she had fallen asleep.

She woke up at 1:55 am, which is earlier than usual, so I tried to shush her back to sleep from my chair in the middle of the room. It didn't work at all. I had to pick her up, nurse her, and then I set her back down in the crib. I sat in the chair again and waited. I think shushing sometimes just keeps her up long, so I just sat quietly this time. I waited ....and waited ....and waited. She played around in her crib, practicing rolling back and forth to each side of the crib, for almost an HOUR before falling back asleep. She barely even fussed. I guess she is just excited b/c she's only been able to roll in one direction up until a few days ago.

She woke up for the day at 6:15 am. Not bad, but I'd like her to push that until 6:30 or 7 am, ideally!

This mornings nap was the real improvement! She fell asleep in 7 minutes, alone in her crib!!!! That was a huge accomplishment.

  • We are not sleep training becuase my DH refuses to let him CIO for more than 2 minutes.  He usually eats his last bottle between 10 and 10:30 and then we rock or pat him on the butt till he is asleep and then put him in his crib.  He then will either sleep till 7am or up once during the night.  Last night he got up and 2 and I no longer feed him durning the night so I patted him back to sleep and he got up for his morning bottle at 7.  All things considered his sleep habits are not that bad but the pedi said that if we dont try and break the rocking/patting to sleep now we may have issues down the road.  I just wish I could get DH on board to try and sleep train.  We have even had luck putting him in his bed awake but it doesnt work all the time.

  • we are on day 3 of a combo between GNST and Ferber.  Both nights she only woke up a couple times for the paci and didn't nurse! she also took TWO naps of 1-2 hours each day!!!!!!  this is a drastic difference for us!

  • No method to my madness, but it's getting better! Put him down awake and he only cried 20 mins this time and slept for 10.5hrs! Smile The time crying is going down little by little each night. It's only been like five nights and we went from hour and a half to twenty minutes!
