Tide Ultra Free and Clear?

I've seen Tide Ultra powder detergent recommended a lot on this board. What about Tide Ultra Free and Clear? At the store I saw that some Tide boxes were specially labeled as ok for HE, and others weren't. Free and Clear didn't have the HE label, so will it work for my HE frontloader? Has anyone tried it? I would love to be able to use a brand that is fairly cheap and readily available from local stores and doesn't have perfumes, but maybe there's a reason I've never seen it mentioned. Thanks!

Re: Tide Ultra Free and Clear?

  • Ok apparently it's called Tide Free & Gentle, and it comes in powder or liquid non-HE, and liquid HE formulas. Does CD detergent have to be powder? Is using the non-HE powder in an HE machine definitely not a good idea? Thanks.

  • I just use the regular Tide Ultra - can find it at any store and it works with both HE and regular machines.

I have been using the original Tide for a year and then the Tide Ultra for about 8 months (original is no longer produced).

Jut be sure to use a small amount, it really can build up if you use too much.  Other than that, I have been soooo pleased.  I love that I didn't have to do the expensive CD specific detergents because I just can use the Tide for all the household laundry, too.

  • Free & Clear detergents have added enzymes and such that are generally considered bad for diapers.  Tide Ultra has a few of those things as well, but because you use it in such small amounts, it's generally considered to be "OK" for diapers.  You do an extra rinse with diaper laundry anyway, so it really ends up with no perfume smell at all.  We use it on all laundry, just in smaller amounts with the diapers.

  • Just to be clear:

You can use a liquid or a powder, but you should use HE safe/compatible formulation for whatever you buy.  Generally, you should stay away from any free&clear type formulas.

If you really want to try Tide, get the Tide Original Ultra version with the HE symbol on it.  Most people use 2 Tbsp per load.  You will need to rinse really well, and might have to strip your diapers more often.

  • Thanks everybody! It's so counterintuitive that the "free and gentle" formula has a bunch of other ingredients to be avoided.
