ear, forehead, or traditional thermometer?

Which one are you registering for? I'd rather not go the traditional route and would easily go for the forehead version of the thermometer. Any thoughts from the 2nd time mommies here? I've heard it's hard to get an accurate reading on the forehead one. Which one are you registering for/getting?

Re: ear, forehead, or traditional thermometer?

  • We registered for an ear thermometer, but I would feel comfortable using a rectal thermometer as well.

  • We have a forehead one, but not the $70 forehead one.  It was a $40 one.  I can't get that sucker to work at all.

We just use a traditional (digital) one that we use in her armpit.  We could use it in her rectum if we needed to, but we haven't had to.

  • My DH and I just got back from our "How to Care for Your Newborn" class and the instructor advised that you get a digital thermometer and take baby's temperature rectally.  No other readings are accurate enough for a newborn.  As a result, I am getting two digitals...one for the rectum and one for regular readings later on.

  • I think most doctors will want a rectal temperature on babies if you call and think your baby has a fever.  They're more accurate.  At DS's one year well-visit, the doctor said we could start using an ear or temporal thermometer.

  • I should add that we have a few, but mostly use the one that they gave us in the hospital.  We do armpit temps because that's what they did.

This. Also we used a rectal for the first few months since that's most accurate on the little ones. Once they're over 4 or 5 months our pedi office uses the forehead so we got one and called it good.

  • Just an FYI ladies, the ears ones aren't accurate or reccomended in infants under 6 months, and at 2 and a half I still can't get an accurate temp on L. I preferrad rectal when he was a baby, it was fast and easy.

We plan on getting a forehead one soon. I use stickers now that go on his chest whenever he is sick, they stay on a day or two and read the temp within .5 of a degree, if thats reading high I confirm with a thermometer.

  • Ear thermometers blow.  I know alot of peds offices still use them, but it is very easy to get an inaccurate reading.  If there's an ear infection it will be high.  If it's not inserted at the exact right angle, it will be low.  If the battery is low, the reading will be low.  My son got a reading of 95 degrees F when he actually had a fever over 101.

For a newborn, you need a traditional digital rectal thermometer - most of these are also good for under the arm.  Of course the under arm reading is usually a degree low.

For older babies and kids, the forehead thermometer is 100% the way to go.  They have started using it at alot of hospitals and doctors offices as well.  It's pretty accurate and so simple that you can take multiple readings in seconds to double check your results.  Just make sure you're swiping the right area or it will be low.

  • Now we use a regular one in the mouth and we have a forehead one as well.  BUT, you should use a rectal one for the first 9 months.  It is not as gross or weird as it sounds and it the most accurate.

  • We have the forehead scan one... Love it!!  DD has learned to sit really still and it only takes a couple seconds.  It is so much easier than having to hold her down while checking under her arm... That is torture!!
