Watching House Hunters is soooo interesting

I just watched two episodes of House Hunters and while we all too painfully know how crazy expensive it is to live in our area these episodes were startling.

House 1.

  -Somewhere in Missouri.

-3,700 Sq. Ft. and Uh-Mazing!!!!  Solid lot size and high end everything

  -Price = $265,000

House 2.

     -San Mateo

     - 1,400 Sq. Ft. and also Uh-Mazing!  Townhouse, brand new, total high end and gorgeous.  Couple got a killer deal at $60K + off asking.

    -Amount put down = $ 235,600

So just to sum that up, the couple in San Mateo put down only 30K less than the Missouri couple paid for their entire house, which of course was 3 times the size.  Holy Crap!

  • I know right?  I watch those shows a lot, and it's crazy to think about how the real estate is around the country compared to here in Northern Ca.

  • Ha! We lived that. back in 2001 we wanted a house and freaked the heck out at prices, packed up and moved to the greater Austin Texas area. We got a 3200 sqft house with 4 bedrooms 3/5 baths, two stories, two living areas, huge open kitchen formal dining room, front office etc for 300k. It totally felt FREE compared to the tiny 1100 sqft 2 bedroom we BID 625k on out here.

We NEVER hoped to be outbid and loose something more than we did that night.

Now we're back here and still shaking our head at the prices of homes.

  • DH and I always watch those shows and think about where we'd like to live if we ever move out of state. I watched one today at lunch that I had recorded. Their budget for the entire house was 150k!!!

  • i've tried to watch house hunters a few times but i get too stabby over 1- how cheap real estate is elsewhere ie a downpayment in CA could pay for my sister's house in FULL in MI 2- the sometimes lack of a dp or the hand wringing that goes on to squeeze said dp from parents, grandparents, etc. and 3- how young some of these people are buying.

Yeah, I don't know how you folks that moved from TX managed to pull yourself out here.  Now I've never lived in TX and my one girlfriend who did said she'd "rather live in a studio apartment in Willits than live in Texas anymore" and her DH is a surgeon so they had an amazing home (and willits is on the way to Fort Bragg, but it's right inland with no economy, save for weed and meth).

I was looking at Real Estate on CL two nights ago and it's was crazy, I looked at Fairfield, Walnut Creek, San Jose and Morgan Hill.  The difference between WC and Fairfield was about 400K which seemed insane, such a think WC is way nicer, easier commute ect but really 400K nicer?  That I'm not sure about.  And looking at Morgan Hill, while still more expensive than living in Chico was gorgeous, huge lots, and for the bay area, totally reasonable prices.

J, Morgan Hill has virtually no economy whatsoever (barely even enough retail for high schoolers!).  It is "reasonable" because it's a bedroom community for the silicon valley and that means a commute on 101.  My mom used to live there and commute to our house in SJ to watch C and it was a 40 minute commute to our burb-like location near downtown.  If you actually had to go to a tech company it would be at least an hour from north MH to north SJ.

When my g'ma died, her heirs sold her house.  She and g'pa bought it new in barely there MH in the late 50's.  It was 5 bedrooms, two baths on a lot and a half.  Needed serious updates and upgrades but was a solid house on a big corner lot.  It sold for under 500K two years ago.

  • There are parts of Texas I would live in - I loved living in downtown Dallas - but husband hates it. We knew when we moved that we would rent for a while until we figured out what hood we wanted to be in, and we're just going to keep renting until our Texas sized dp becomes California sized. Which is why I lurk on the money matters board....

  • That's crazy.  I remember there used to be a show on HGTV where they would show what you could get for a certain price in different states.  In CA, it was always like a condo and it would be this huge house in other states.

  • Go a little further South than Morgan Hill to me...and Gilroy :) I freaking love it here. My husband commutes to San Jose and its about 40 minutes...and thats really only like 20 mins longer than his commute was when we lived in San Jose since after he passes the traffic its relaxing freeway driving. For us it works out great since he walked in the door so wound up from his drive he wasn't ready to be daddy/hubby but now he walks in and is ready to go! Would love to find him a job locally of course but would also love him to get a new job in San Jose too!!
