May 2012 Moms

I may or may not have used my pump

to see if my boobs really did leak the other day.

And I may or may not have figured out that they did.

Re: I may or may not have used my pump

  • What does it feel like? I don't know anyone who has pumped so I have no one to ask!

  • Yeah, I want to know too! I am so worried that I would feel like a cow or just uncomfortable with it. I know while I was at the hospital with DD2 (she had rsv) the lady next to me was pumping and just the noise of the pump made me feel weird.

  • It's not comfortable. And I had to have it set to the lowest speed and the lowest suction level. But I'm sure engorgement will outweigh the discomfort of the pump haha It wasn't painful though. Especially since I wasn't truly pumping, it was uncomfortable. It probably doesn't feel so odd once you're actually extracting milk.

Was it like a vacuum? That's how I'm imagining it.

Kinda. It releases though, doesn't continuously suck.

  • I read once that can induce preterm labor, but you might want to double check.

haha! I'm not looking forward to pumping mainly because it's another thing to throw into the mix. But I really want to make sure I have a stash in case I get sick or something happens to me.

It can help induce labor later on, but I highly doubt it'd send me into preterm. Although I also have no reason to do it again lol

The way I see it is there are moms who continue BF their toddlers while pregnant and are just fine. A few minutes at the pump won't hurt. =]

  • Ok so do you girls want to know more about what pumping really feels like?? I bf and pumped for a year and only stopped about two months ago? I was more afraid of bfing and pumping than labor last time (my first was a bottle baby.)

Pumping isn't that big of a deal now I was never one who would choose to ep, I did it to keep up being able to bf when I went back to work. It feels like a vacuum but it has a pattern to it. I did feel like a cow but it was so worth it to be able to bf. I loved bfing once I got past the first three weeks. I do not recommend starting to pump until about three weeks bfing so that you've established a pattern with your lo. At first it does hurt some but at first bfing hurts. I don't care that people say it shouldn't hurt at first your body is getting used to a lot. It shouldn't continuously hurt but your boobs and nips will be very sore. If you plan on pumping a lot defiantly get a good double electric pump it will make all the difference. And if your like me and still scared put it on your palm first to see what it feels like.  Hope this helps some of you a little.

  • I'm also going to weigh in on what pumping feels like since I was hooked up to mine 4x a day for about 9 months.

At first, breastfeeding hurts. A lot. Even if your child latches right (and many don't). There are special creams you put on to help with the pain (Lanisoh makes one). After that, your nipples become much more resilient. Pumping sort of feels like a vacuum that goes on and off (think "slurp...slurp...slurp...slurp"). It doesn't hurt. Especially not compared to a teething child. It's very mechanical and I often refered to myself as the milk factory. But it was not much of an inconvenience, didn't bother me (I did other things while I pumped-- get a hands free bra and you will be much happier!), and was definitely worth it to boost DS's immune system.

I will say that my boobs are still very resilient. I did not have the symptom of sore boobs with this pregnancy at all.

Oh, and as a fun aside (to the comment about leaky boobs)-- just wait until you are engorged. Your boobs can literally spray breastmilk across the room!

  • I will also weigh in.  I BF and pumped my son until he was almost a year old (2 weeks shy).  I didn't pump for a long time, but as a way to finish out the school year after he was born.  Pumping is kind of like breastfeeding, in that it will hurt a bit initially but once you get used to it, the pain goes away.  It definitely hurts more when your breasts are not full of milk, too.  I think it is just one of those things that you have to get comfortable with, and it goes so much easier.

  • Thanks for answering my questions ladies! I'll probably be EPing after the first two months so this helped me prepare!
