Upstate NY Babies

Melissa

Hey! I remember you saying Nat had a really bad go with acid reflux. We're having a really hard time with Callie and I am just struggling with how to help her. The medicine she's on doesn't really seem to be helping that much anymore and our Dr. said he doesn't really want to up the dosage because the amount she's on is a very safe one. Nighttimes are especially bad, where she's inconsolable many times, usually the only way I can help stop her from screaming is to nurse her more, which is in turn then going to cause her more pain about an hour after that. We're doing gripe water and gas drops with her too.... Did you guys find anything else that helped Nat?

We too had acid reflux struggles with Greyson. Bad enough that he was on meds which helped. I sort of felt that the Gripe water actually made things worse but that may have just been me. Also, the vitamins were a bad trigger ( I don't know if Callie in on any vits. at this point).

He took to the pacifier which helped because he was producing saliva to keep stuff down a little more. We slept him in his carrier a few times for the really bad nights. During the day he would nap in his swing and I think being elevated and in motion also helped.

I can't even say how long it lasted but it felt horrible while we were dealing with it but at a certain point it just went away.

I hope some of these other suggestions help. Good luck.

  • We switched natalie to prilosec. I think it was around 3.5 mos. It did help quite a bit.. but gripe water has always helped both my girls a ton. She is at the point now where I am trying to wean her off the prilosec but I think she kind of still needs it.

  • Thanks girls! She's on rantadine (sp?) which I'm pretty sure is the generic for Zantac. Then we've also been doing the gripe water and gas drops when she's really bad. We keep her upright, try shushing her, swaying, singing, walking, bouncing, etc. nothing seems to help. I just don't know what to do.  Luckily she doesn't have a ton of the spitting up just lots of screaming and body language like she's in pain. She also seems to have a hard time swallowing, cries when she burps, and makes these gasping sounds like she can't breathe which scares me to death! Did Nat and Greyson do these things?

  • I would see if you could switch her to prilosec. There is a generic for omeprazole or so,ething similar. And its only 1x a day vs 2. It definitely sounds like reflux symptoms to me. The other option would be doing an elimination diet to see if any of that helps. My pedi never sugguested that for me.. which to be honest I am relieved about. I have her on sensitive (low lactose)formula now but I am hoping ti wean her back to standard formula soon. T Nat didnt gasp like she couldn't breathe but she did choke on her own spitup all.the.time which was also scary!
