Best diaper rash cream/remedy?

DD has had a rash for about a week - red tush and raised bumps.  She had a rash when she was 1 month old, and I switched from Pampers to another brand of diapers and it went away.  We switched back to Pampers when the rash was gone...

I have tried Boudreaux's Butt Paste and A&D.  (We also switched again from Pampers to Huggies to see if that would help). The rash isn't getting better, but it's not getting worse.

What do you use for diaper rash?

Re: Best diaper rash cream/remedy?

  • We use Bag Balm, and it works like a charm. You can get it at any drug store, Walmart, Target, etc. (although, at Target, you have to get it from the pharmacist for some reason). It probably seems a little expensive, but it seriously lasts forever! The cheapest I've found it is on Amazon. Hope your LO feels better soon!

  • I use Desitin for diaper rash, and we put A&D (the "protect" one, I think it's called) on her every night after bath time, whether she has a rash or not. It's kind of like a protetive vaseline-y barrier.

  • I haven't had to try it yet, but I was told Aquaphor is the cure-all.

  • I use Aquafore on a daily basis to prevent diaper rash and it has been AWESOME.  Before I started using it, my LO had a bad rash and my Dr. actually prescribed me this huge jar off stuff (it's something mixed with Zinc) and it cleared it up right away.  You may want to call your Dr. and get the script so you can knock it out faster than OTC.

  • We use this stuff called Endit. It's made by pharmacists in Shallote, NC. When we notice any redness on LO's bum, we put a fingertip amount on and it is usually gone the same day. I highly recommend this product to anyone. They have a website where you can order it.

  • Sounds like it may be a yeast diaper rash.  Lotramin (yes, the athlete's foot stuff) with Desitin, or Bordeaux's Butt Paste (anything with zinc oxide) on top will take care of it quickly.

  • Aquaphor is the best product... But the best cure us some bare bottom baby naked time! The air helps dry out and it helps. Also, mt pedi recommended baking soda baths, throw a tablespoon in the baby bathtub!

  • My DD gets a fungal diaper rash, so we use Lotrimin (same stuff you use on athlete's foot- pedi recommended it).  Gross!  My friends whose babies have "normal" diaper rash swear by Aquafor!

  • Agreed with the above posts.  I'd start with treating it as a regular diaper rash and if that doesn't work, try the lotrimin to treat a fungal rash.

Triple paste works wonders..your dr can give you a script since it is a little pricey, but it is available over the counter.  Honestly oxygen is the best treatment.  Give the bum plenty of of time to air out (great to do during tummy time, on a pad or blanket) and try to change diapers very often.  Another thing to try is cleaning the bottom with water and baking soda (using a wash cloth), dry completely and slather on the triple paste or any paste with zinc oxide.

  • What works for us is:

    - Plain water wipes (just use soft paper towels, add water) and dab, not wipe, for diaper changes.

    - Naked tummy time!  Let that butt dry out completely before putting anything on it!  Buy the underpads (usually sold in the incontinence section of the drug store) and lay them out over the TT blanket to contain any accidents.

     - Once dry, Aquaphor by the gobs!  If it's super red and nasty, mix equal parts Aquaphor and Maalox (takes a while for the Maalox to mix in, but it will. Ends up looking like white frosting).  The Maalox helps cut the acidity of the excrement, which can cause irritation.  You can switch to plain Aquaphor when it gets better.

Hope this helps!  Works like a charm for me.  The Aquaphor/Maalox helped so much, within a few diaper changes.  Redness went down a lot!

  • We also like Triple Paste - seems to clear things up right away.

  • As PP...skip all the rest and buy triple paste!
  • Triple Paste! It's the best, a little pricey but it works wonders!
  • If it's a regular diaper rash, I use Desitin to treat it and it goes away in a day or two.  If it persists, I try maximum strength desitin, and it usually works or anything with zinc oxide will have the same effect.  However, if it's a fungus type of rash, I use Lotrimin and with one application, you already see the difference.  Now that my 9 month old is in his full-force teething phase, and he seems to have more than 3 bowel movements a day, I've been giving him 1/2 teaspoon of Primadophilus Children by Nature's Way (mixing it in his last bottle at night).  It's a probiotic blend and helps with any digestive and intestinal issues he may have due to the teething.
