She started complaining about an "allergic reaction" on Thursday, stayed at work, came in again on Friday and worked all day...went to the ER on Sunday apparently. I wasn't in work yesterday or today (delivering Thurs), but she contacted our boss Sunday who TOLD HER that she MUST contact me ASAP. I just got a text from her now (Tues!) with this list of diagnoses....
Seriously, WTF? She's the MOST selfish, self-centered, strange person I've ever known. She came in HORRIBLY sick in September and was sent home...came back the next day, just as sick, hacking all over the place, and said "I can't afford to stay home." I wound up catching it, of course, and spent 10 DAYS on the couch, on two different antibiotics and the threat of hospitalization if the second antibiotic didn't work since it was the strongest they could prescribe with me being pregnant.
Now I'm TWO DAYS from delivery and she lands this one on me? Her mouth is apparently riddled with open sores, her hands and feet are covered, she's had a fever since Thurs night (which she masked with Tylenol and came to work with, unbeknownst to the rest of the small staff).
To top it off, they had a little shower for me on Friday. We all chose our lunches and they ordered from PF Changs. I was so looking forward to my curried vegetables (I don't eat meat). After searching through everything, they realized MY lunch was the only one not there, but there was an extra chicken dish. Our boss had everyone check to be sure they had the right entree before starting. Nope, no one had it... Half way through the lunch this idiot realizes she doesn't have deep fried HONEY CHICKEN, but rather CURRY VEGETABLES. What kind of moron... Then she offers me her half-eaten lunch and goes on to eat her honey chicken.
I'm seriously so DONE with this b!tch. Done, done, done. TG I have 12 weeks off now, but I can honestly say that I don't see my tolerance for her coming back. Everyone in the office is grossed out by her and irritated by her and just doesn't GET her.
Now I have to sit and wait for a callback from my Ob/Gyn to see what the potential complications are (the incubation period is 6 days so I would start to show signs/symptoms tomorrow or on my delivery day/Thurs!), but having worked in peds in the past I know that I cannot handle my newborn if I should get Coxsackie. I don't even know about the other stuff she has on top of it. She should start investigating the Witness Protection Program now, just in case...
Re: Coworker with Coxsackie, aphthous ulcers & whitlow herpetic
Holy crap, seriously?! I hate selfish people that go to work when they're sick sick sick. It's totally fine for them to get you sick so you have to take time off, but G-d forbid they have to use a day or two!!
Ugh, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this
I went two weeks without pay (no sick time! I only get 5 days total and had JUST used them for our honeymoon the month before) because she was too worried about going two days without pay -- she was literally FINE after two full days on the antibiotic, but refused to stay home for those two days. I LOATHE this idiot.
Then her text was "Gina told me I need to get in touch with you to tell you what my dr said I had. Let me know if you want me to text it or if you want to give me a call. I know you're super busy."
I already knew because two other coworkers let me in on everything because THEY were concerned (but not her, nope!), so I just said to text me. Took her TWO HOURS to reply. If I didn't know what was wrong, that would have been two hours of panic thinking WTH DOES HER DR SAY SHE HAS THAT SHE HAS TO LET ME KNOW ABOUT??? Her reply finally came through saying "I have coxsackie, herpetic whitlow and aphthous ulcers. Hope you're doing well!"
I can't even reply to her. What can I possibly even say?
"F*#& you" comes to mind
This! Hell, I'd complain to HR about it. Even if they can't do anything about the current situation, maybe they can have a talk with her about coming in to work sick from now on.
Hopefully you don't catch any of that mess, but at least you know what to tell your doctor to test you for.
It's a small company of only 8..no HR to speak of. Ironically, I work for a physician!!! A physician who, for whatever reason (none of us can figure it out) seems to "feel bad" for this girl (girl is used loosely, she's a grown woman of 32). She F's stuff up and has a horrific lack of social skills and is totally ME, ME, ME about everything....you can't have a conversation around her without her LOUDLY interjecting "You don't understand, ***I***......." Annoying, loud, a mess (seriously, take a blow dryer and a brush to your head before you go in to a professional place of employment - any of the rest of us would be asked to present ourselves more professionally!), LAZY as the day is long. She's just a self-centered SLOB ...who eats two lunches, leaving the 9 mo pregnant woman with nothing but edamame and an offer of Coxsackie-ridden half eaten leftovers.
Apparently all of the stuff she has now is viral - there isn't even anything you can do to stop it or cure it. You get active sores for 7-10 days and are potentially contagious even beyond that.
Going into my positive thinking mode since there is nothing left for me to do! I will NOT get any of this, I will be HEALTHY, I will NOT catch asshat's cooties, I will be WELL....
This. Definitely file a complaint w/ HR so it is on record, especially since this happened before. What an awful situation. I would be livid.
That sucks!
wait did I read correctly that your boss told her she HAD to come in while sick? huH?
http://balletandbabies.blogspot.com
No, no....in September my boss told her she had to go HOME sick, but she came back in the next day (when she should have been sent home again, but I digress).
This time my boss told her that she had to contact me with her list of diagnoses, to keep me informed just in case it can result in any issues with me or my baby who is arriving, oh, THURSDAY.
My boss is good, but I really wish she would find a way to can this girl because she's more harm than help! Not just with this, but in all aspects (although giving credit where credit is due, she can un-jam a copy machine like nobody's business).
I spoke with one of my doctors...she tried assuring me that the chance of catching this is minimal unless we shared utensils, a drink, etc...BUT this idiot caught it somehow and she has a habit of using my phone and if I have to step away from my desk, she steps in (instead of calling our patients over to her own window three steps away). It's passed through saliva and she, you guessed it!, never covers a cough and since her mouth was bothering her (because it's covered in blistering, ulcerous sores!) she kept touching her mouth...then my things I'm sure. No way to know if I contracted it until Thursday has come and gone, but they're moving ahead with my section as planned in spite of this. If, however, I do develop it then I can pass it on to my baby if I have any contact with him/her (not to mention my 6 yr old who is going to want/need extra attention from Mommy as she transitions from only child to big sister).
I am taking deep, long breaths, but Lord help this freak if I get any of this!
