My kids "get" to start chores at age 5 - they did laundry, cleaned dishes, swept, cleaned bathrooms, on top of keeping their rooms clean. I see nothing wrong with it (keeping safety in mind in all cases) They were closely supervised and *I* felt the jobs were age appropriate. They were excited to help (that lasted for several years actually and my son really looked forward to the day he turned 5 so he could help - he'd been watching DD1 help for nearly 2 years!). As a family with 2 working parents, I DO expect the kids to help out to the extent they are able.

I may be the worst mommy ever but that didn't raise my hackles at all. I think it is wonderful that she is teaching her son help out....especially with toilet duties. some woman will thank her in about 25 years.
(also, if she is like me, she may not use chemicals to clean the toilet. I have a homemade concoction that isn't toxic and is neutral for the water supply)

Meh, I made L clean up the toilet plenty at that age, especially since he had an aversion to touching himself to aim when spraying everywhere. There was no way I was cleaning it up or sitting in it. He still does toilets for the same reason. I thought he would have cut it out by now, but he's cleaning it, so it must not bother him.
All our kids have some type of chore in our house. T is great at folding laundry, E is learning. K puts it away. L sorts. That kind of thing. L and T can both cook (and yes, on the stove, but T isn't allowed unless L, me or DH is around). And if they make a mess, it's their responsibility to clean. Mom =/= maid.
They still get off easy though, I do a lot, but they have things added as they age up and it's appropriate.
Eh, NBD. My 3yo wanted to help clean the toilet and mop the floors last weekend. He thought cleaning the toilet was fun, but mopping the floors elicited a "this isn't much fun" response and he handed the mop back to me.
If she was asking her kid to trim the hedges or wash knives, I might give her the
I guess I am coming from the place of my water is REALLY hard and mineral rich (I will never have to take a calcium pill in my life.) To get it off stuff, you have to use chemicals that require full ventalation. I am all about kids helping with chores. M "helps" pick up his toys and loves to sweep. I am leary about him getting into any chemicals until he is much older, no matter how enviromentally friends and natural they are.
