January 2012 Moms

Please recommend pads for post delivery

I know this might sound like a stupid post, but I am a FTM and I am going to pick up some supplies for after my delivery.  Do I need like a super strenght pad?  What kind did you second time mom's prefer?  I want to make sure I have some in the house because I heard it can be a bit messy (I was a tampon wearer for periods so I have nothing in my house right now).  Thanks!

  • I recomend Heavy Duty with wings and if you are anything like me, you might even want to go for the Over nighters for the length as well. Brand is just preference really.

  • I'm lurking from Feb 2012, but I've heard a lot of recommendation for using Depends rather than a pad for the extra coverage.

  • I used the Always overnight ones (in the purple package) after delivery, and they worked out great.  They were super long and thick (and the thickness actually helped as extra cushion for when I was sore sitting down the first week or two).  I always used the highest amount of protection I could find because I would go for hours and hours without any bleeding, and then have a huge gush that would fill up an entire pad almost immediately (supposedly this can be normal because a lot of other people on the boards said the same thing was happening to them).

After a couple weeks, I switched to the thinner Always Infinity ones and they worked just fine.  I also despise wearing pads, but they were bearable.

  • Take whatever they will give you at the hospital.  When I came home I used the huge ones from the hospital at first.  Then I switched to overnights with wings.  I've used the regular and ultra thin because I happened to have both at home.  I'm only 6d PP, but the overnight ultra thin with wings have been fine for me.

  • I always used always overnight maxi with wings for periods and after delivery. It's what my hospital gives out too. The extra length helps a lot more with leaks.

  • I asked this on the Babies 0-3mo board a few weeks back, and so many ladies commented that they loved Always Infinity pads.

I was in the same boat as you, never really used pads since my period was only 3 days long an very very light thanks to my BCP. I've stocked up on a few boxes of Infinity overnights, and one box of heavy.

  • I use the ones from the hospital for the first few pp days. After that, anything heavy duty with wings! And get a lot, you need to change them FREQUENTLY. I'm a pretty heavy pp bleeder, though.

  • I have a sister with special needs who gets incontence supplies from the state for free.  My mom has given me two packages of Poise pads and will be passing along a package or two of Sis' adult pull ups as well for those first few days pp.  After the super heavy bleeding subsides I plan on using Always w/ wings like I do when I'm on my peroid.

  • December 2011 mom turned January 2012 mom here... I am 5 days PP and honestly, I had 2 big things of pads with me at the hospital that I brought and used MAYBE 6 of one pack. The first day was the worst for me and then I seriously was just wanting pantyliners. I even had my husband bring me some because the others felt like sandbags between my legs. I have never been a heavy bleeder during my regular periods though so this does not surprise me.
