Do You Steralize Bottles?

  • I didn't...and still don't.

  • I did at first use and then occasionally threw them in the dishwasher for a good cleaning (the water is hot enough to steralize in there). Mostly washed by hand. I was told it was fine unless you used well water or were concerned about lead pipes etc

  • I did until DD was fully on formula at around 7 months. For whatever reason, I felt better sterilizing bottles that I was putting BM into.

  • I can't remember the last time I sterilized a bottle.  Maybe when Ava was a newborn and it was a new pack of bottles.

Our pedi does not worry about sterilizing bottles for immunocompetent infants, even if you have a well - we just had to boil the water for the first 8 weeks.  We used the dishwasher (without the sanitizing cycle) just because it was easier.

  • I sterilize once, then just plain wash with hot soapy water after that.

We don't do very many bottles though...maybe one a week?  So I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

This. Is there a reason not to sterilize?

  • I don't all the time but do now more actually.  Now that he is taking less bottles a day it is easier to wash them and sterilize them all at night.  I was told it wasn't necessary so when we had more (like when I had to supplement after each nursing) it was too overwhelming.

Just the extra time and cost of the bags (or sterilizer if you buy one of those).  It's like warming bottles - not necessary, but if you want to do it and/or buy products to make it easier, knock yourself out.

  • I only sterilized before the first use.  After that, no.  I think it's overkill to sterilize constantly personally.

  • Nope.  I actually think it's a bad thing to sterilize too much because your baby needs to be exposed to germs to build a good immune system.  Our pedi said we shouldn't worry about exposing DS to our home germs and that it's actually a good thing.
