BF babies: double weight gain by 4 months?

Kellymom has got me a little worried.  DS started out big (9lbs4oz) but I'm betting he's 15 1/2 lbs now.  Def not near 18 lbs!  What were your BF babies' 4 month stats and did they double their weight gain?

Re: BF babies: double weight gain by 4 months?

  • DD was 7 lbs 1 oz at birth, and she just went to the doctor a couple weeks ago (at 3 months) b/c she was sick and weighed 13 lbs 9 oz, so I'm guessing she'll have hit the 14 lb 2 oz mark by her 4-month check-up.  However, since your baby was so big when he was born, I wouldn't be surprised if your pedi gives him more time to double his weight.  After all, 15.5 lbs at 4 months is still a totally normal weight, even if it's not double his birth weight.

  • Kat was 8 lbs 14 oz at birth, and was 16 lbs 1 ounce at 4 month appt.  she's in the 90% percentile for weight (was in the 97th at 2 month appt).  So I doubt there's an issue there.
  • DD was 7 lbs, 10 oz at birth and 20 lbs at 4 months, so yes, but she was off the percentile charts.

  • I always thought they were supposed to double by 6 months.
  • I don't have a real answer for you, but I had a big baby (10lb 9oz) and weight gain issues during this first month. It does seem that a lot of these rules of thumb don't apply to big babies. The math is working against them.  There is also the issue that your child may not have been meant to be as big as his birthweight would indicate.
  • I wouldn't worry.  DD was 7lbs 1oz at birth and 11lbs 12 oz at her 4 month checkup and doctor said not to worry.  They all grow at different rates.
  • Graham was 7 pounds 12 oz at birth, and I'd guess he's 14 1/2 pounds now (will be 4 months next week), so I don't think he'll have doubled his weight.

  • yes, dd was 7.7 at birth and amazingly was exactly 14.14 at her 4mo. appt.
  • DS was 8 lbs 3 oz at birth and 16 lbs 15.7 oz at 4 months, so just over doubled in size.
