How much to pay babysitter

DH and I are going out for my birthday this weekend. His cousin is a college student who works at a daycare and has agreed to babysit for us. I'm just wondering what we should pay her. Usually MIL is our babysitter. But she watches him while I work and I work all week this week and the next, so I didn't want to ask her. Have any of you hired a sitter before? What did you pay them? TIA.

I would think $10/hour. We haven't had to use a babysitter, other than grandparents whom we don't pay, so I'm not totally sure, but that would be my initial thought.

I am a nanny so I charge weekly, but when I was younger I would charge $10-15/hr. Usually a higher rate for more kids or infants like in your case. I would not be disappointed to make $10/hr if it were someone I was related to though!

always ask before booking.

i charged differently based on the time of day. if it was when LO was awake it would def be $10 an hour. but after bed i dropped the rate b.c i was pretty much just watching your cable and eating your food (stock up on snacks and drinks. your sitter will love you!)

however i would hike up the rate after the agreed upon time. i did this b.c i sat for a recently single mom who would tell me midnight and waltz in at 2 am. so unless it was a first offense or y it was an emergency i charged extra.

and yes, you need to feed her lol!

$15 to $20 depending plus $25 for take out.

The average in Pittsburgh is about $10/hour. But it really depends on where you live. When I lived 2 hours north of Pittsburgh and babysat I was lucky if I made $6/hour.

I know my sister is babysitting back home and makes $7/hour right now.

Thanks ladies. I am going to ask her what she normally charges non-family members, but I just didn't want to offend her if I offered to low. I was thinking $10-12/hr + dinner. Looks like that is what the norm is.
