another convertable carseat ? / poll

At what age did your LO move from infant seat to convertable seat? Did you wait to get to the weight limit or move over sooner?

Re: another convertable carseat ? / poll

  • I waited until he hit the limit.  My LO was a slow grower as an infant and I just didn't want the hassle and expense of researching a seat.  He seemed comfortable until now.

  • 5.5 months.  She was getting too tall for it and I was getting tired of lugging around her infant seat.  It was wonderful when we switched!
  • We moved early, I was sick of lugging the car seat around!  Probably around 6 months we started using a convertible my sister gave us.

  • We switched him to a convertible carseat at 12mo.  He hasn't reached the weight/height limit, but he was just getting too heavy to carry in the infant seat anymore.  We still use the infant seat in DH's car when he needs to pick him up.

  • We moved him at about 8 months. The infant seat was getting heavy and annoying to lug around.

  • My older one moved at 7 months, the younger one at 3-4 months. Neither liked the infant carrier (read: screamed any minute they were in it) and neither ever slept through moving the carrier from the car to the house, so I had no reason to keep them in it any longer. If our carrier has expired before #3 arrives we may skip the carrier entirely and move straight to a convertible seat since we never used it as a carrier anyway.

  • 4.5 months. He hated his infant seat, and I always wore him when we went out anyway. I liked all of the extra safety features of his convertible as well.

  • I should add that by the time each kid was 4 weeks old we were leaving the carrier in the car all the time. Since they hated it I just moved them to a moby wrap to leave the car and left the seat there.

  • We moved her around 5 months.  She was still tiny and no where near the weight limit, but I liked how she sat up instead of laying down, she seemed much more comfortable like that.

  • My DD was 18 months before she was out of the infant seat.  She weighed 18 pounds in the 30 pound limit seat and outgrew the height then.

My DS was 11 months when he outgrew the height.

  • DD1 was in her infant seat until 13 months. She was 12 lbs below the weight limit, but an inch from the height limit at that point, so we switched. I stopped taking the seat out of the car around 8-9 months but saw no reason to move her to the convertible seat because she fit and seemed comfortable.

Since DD2 is even smaller than DD1, we'll probably keep her in the infant seat even longer if she still fits.

  • We switched Hadley over this week actually, got a Boulevard and I love it!  I had bought the infant seat used and it was safe I feel for sure, but.. I wanted her in something that "felt" safer to me.
  • I loved our bucket seat, and so we waited until the last minute possible, which happens to be this weekend, and we will be putting her in her Britax, which we have had for a year. She is 18 months, we definitely got our money's worth.

  • 12 months.

  • We moved Ian around 7 months. We were going on a long road trip, and felt like he would be more comfortable in the convertible. Plus, by that point he was getting really heavy to actually carry around in his seat(almost 20 lbs).

  • I don't really remember when we moved Abigail to the convertible seat. I want to say that it was around 8 to 9 months. She hadn't hit the weight or the height limit on the infant seat yet, but she looked fairly uncomfortable in it.

  • I moved her at 6 months because she was screaming her head off in the infant seat.

  • By 4 mths old, my DS hit the height limit, but was nowhere near the weight limit.  So at 4 mths old, he went into the convertable seat.  This time around, we aren't even buying an infant seat, we're just going straight to the convertable one.

  • we just moved. LO is so much happier now! he was starting to look squished and uncomfortable in his infant seat. would cry when going in and he always loved it before. so I knew it was time. I am pretty sure he is nearing the height limit on the infant one anyway. we still have it in our 2nd car though but rarely use that car.

  • We moved DD to a convertable when she hit the height limit (she was no where near the weight limit).  I cannot remember when for sure - some time around 5 months I think.

  • I guess we are "late" in doing so over here! I just ordered her convertible car seat online yesterday and DD is 13 months.  She finally maxed out in height, although weight-wise she is still good (we have the KeyFit 30).  I felt like with all the money we spent we should try to use the infant carrier as long as possible, although I long ago stopped carrying her in it, we just keep it in the car.

  • I figured it would be quite a range!  I feel better. We've been researching them for awhile, but then we got busy with the holidays and still haven't gotten one. We aren't at the limits yet, but he seems squished and I think it's time. I sort of dread not having his little bucket to carry him in (and click into the stroller) but I want him to be comfy!! Thanks for all the responses!

  • We're thinking of switching now, at 8 months. We could have earlier but didn't because of the 50% chance of him staying asleep in the seat if we moved it inside. Now he rarely stays asleep in it and he's getting so tall that we want to make the switch.
  • We moved around 6 months.  He wasn't quite at the weight yet, but very close.  He was getting too heavy to carry in the infant carrier, we already had the convertible seat, and he was starting to want to sit up more so we just switched the seats out.

  • DD always screamed in her infant seat - we thought it was just her not liking the car, but maybe it was just that car seat! She very rarely slept in it and usually cried in it out in public so I wore her everywhere, anyway. We switched at 7-ish months and now I kinda wish earlier! Maybe she would have been more relaxed as an infant. I now know that she hates being confined - no footed jammies, tight clothes, small spaces, etc.

  • We waited until he hit the height limit, which was last week, lol.  Our infant car seat went up to 30 lbs or 30in.  DS hit 30in quickly but he's far from the weight limit.

  • My girls were 9 months old (8 months adjusted). They still fit in their seats, but with twins it was just getting to be too much for me to lug both the seats out to the garage and up into the SUV (I am only 5'2" in height). It was easier for me to put one in a pack in play inside the house while I carried the first twin out to the car and fastened into the seat. Then I went back in for the second child.
