December 2011 Moms

to wake the baby or not to wake the baby...

DD is a peanut who was born at 5lb 7oz and gained 7.5oz from week 1-2.  We were waking her every 3 hours to eat, except at night, when we woke her at 5 hrs.  Last night, she fed at 2 am and slept until 9.  That seems like too long IMO. Is it Ok to let her sleep and eat when she wakes up or keep 3-4 hrs in the day and wake up after 5 at night.  She hits 3 weeks on Thursday if this is helpful.

  • Are you breastfeeding or ff? If you are breastfeeding, I wouldnt go more than 4 hours without feeding or at least pumping.  Your supply is still getting established.

I still wake DD every 3-4 hours because she is still not quite back to her birth weight.

  • Once she gets back to her birth weight you can stop waking her to eat at night. My first daughter was the exact same way and sleeping completely through the night at 3 weeks old. I had the same concern as you and asked my doctor who reassured me there was no need to wake her to eat once she regained what she'd lost at the hospital. So with her, and this baby, I wake them every 3hrs during the day to break up her sleep so she's not confusing day and night and to make sure she eats enough during the day so that she doesn't wake up a bunch of times at night to make up for missed feeds during the day. And then at night I let her get up whenever she wants to eat.
