Trying to Get Pregnant

Ovulation Monitor? Or Relaying on Temp/charting

Hey ladies! I'm relatively new at charting. Started back in July 2011 tracking my cycle length, CM, etc.

I was considering buying an ovulation kit like the clearblue test or the digital monitor.

Anyone use either of those? Or do most of you rely on temp charting?

Re: Ovulation Monitor? Or Relaying on Temp/charting

  • I rely soley on Temping becuase I never seem to get a positive on an OPK, so I stopped wasting the money.

  • I started charting/temping to TTA and we'll continue with that when we TTC.

I don't really care for the monitors because they can give a false sense of security, imo. They can show a surge or give a high reading, but you won't know if you actually O'd unless you temp.

I've had a few annov cycles where a monitor/OPK would have given me a high reading/surge, but my body never actually O'd.

  • I am on my 2nd month charting.  I temp, chart and use OPKs.  I have yet to see a positive OPK so this month I also started using a CBEFM.  It was pretty useless this cycle but is supposedly just learning me and will give better readings next cycle.

If you haven't tried OPKs yet than start with those.  You may be fine only using those.  I am only using CBEFM as I don't seem to catch my surge on the OPKs.

Regarding the fertility monitor--I'm having this same experience.

You might start with temping and OPKs (you can get those really cheap) before making the big investment on the monitor. Of course, I say that because I'm a big cheapie! My sister gave me her unused monitor; I would not have bought it myself.

Most people here, myself included, are using both.  I JUST starting using OPKs though.

BTW, I like the picture of you and your guy in your siggy! Good photographer, whoever that was.  (I'm a bit of an amateur photography nerd...)

  • Last time I was TTC I temp/charted this time I don't sleep consistantly enough to temp so I'm going to try opk's.  The monitor seems like a lot of money and I'm pretty sure that I have a good idea when my FW is.

  • With #1 we used a OPK and had success on the first month.  May have been a fluke, but we're going to start that way this time around, too... (this month, actually).  I'm just learning about temp/charting now, but if we aren't lucky this month, I will start charting next month.

  • Really, at the beginning at least, it's best to do both.

Temping is hugely helpful in confirming ovulation (this something that only temping can do). Unfortunately it can only do so after the fact.

OPKs and the like are great because, assuming you will ovulate, they will in most cases give you a heads-up.

I used the Clearblue fertility monitor and I loved it, because it took the guesswork out of OPKs for me.

  • I just rely on temping and charting. I usually O within the same time period each cycle. OPK's can't confirm that you in fact O'd (the just tell you that you are gearing up to O), you need to temp to confirm that you did in fact O. Your body can gear up to O and not for some reason.

  • With #1 we invested in the clear blue easy monitor and loved it we were trying for 6 months and then purchased it and the 2nd month of using it we conceived.  The day after I found out I was pregnant my dog ate the monitor (don't think he was too happy)  So now we are going on month 3 TTC and we brought up the idea of buying a new monitor but we are going to try out temp and and just regular OPKs and hopefully it will go well.  My husband really wants to invest in a monitor again but I am ready to try it this way around.

  • Temping is number one for me.  I use the IC opk's as well, but my temp/cm chart is what I really trust.
