I had a growth scan at 37 weeks and baby measured

7pounds 3 ounces!!!   The tech said it is accurate to about a pound either way.  It sound like I am going to have a big baby, I still have 2 1/2 weeks to go.

Re: I had a growth scan at 37 weeks and baby measured

  • Did they do a growth scan because they thought LO would be big (or small)?

I ask because my OB hasn't estimated size in a very long time, and wouldn't be surprised if LO was bigger!

  • Generally if you have Gestational Diabetes they do a Growth Scan around 37 weeks. I had one with DS#1, and he was only in the 3rd percentile...so I was induced due to low weigh/blood flow through the umbilical cord. GD goes either way- either too big or too small
  • I had one at 38 weeks because the doc thought that my belly measured large.  According to the ultrasound, I was actually measuring 1 day behind, but then she said the estimated weight was 7lbs 12oz.  Is that average for 38 weeks?  It seems like a pretty good sized baby to me, not too big or too small.  I just hope I don't go over so that he doesn't get too big.  If he's in the 8lbs range, I could handle that.

  • Not sure if that is big or average but they say big babies are better sleepers so just think of it as a positive!

  • Bigger=healthier is what I have heard
  • Mine measured 7# 14 oz. @ 36w.  Tongue Tied  But those are notoriously inaccurate and 1-2# off (or up to 20%).

The only person I've heard have an accurate reading was my friend pg w/ triplets and she delivered the day after the sono.  (and I'm pretty sure their equipment was a little more high tech for triplets!)

  • I don't have GD.  I was seeing a high risk Dr. due to other issues and he wanted me to have periodic scans to check the size.

I just want to say that this is not true.  A healthy baby can be born in a wide variety of weights and I'm pretty sure that the average weight is around 8 pounds.  Bigger does not necessarily mean healthier, gestational age is more a determinate factor of health then anything.

  • My MW said she was measuring at 7-7.5 lbs yesterday (37w5d)... She said this was right on track though, not big, not small. Obviously not guaranteed.
