Babies: 6 - 9 Months

6.5-m.o. refuses tummy time - help!

My little one refuses tummy time - she has learned how to roll from back to front and almost immediately rolls out of it or fusses. Once she's on her back she kicks happily. She does well with fine motor skills - grabbing things, moving between hands, bringing to mouth. And she is doing pretty well sitting up unsupported (still needs us to be nearby as she is still wobbly).

How did you teach your babies to crawl if they refuse to be on their bellies???

  • DD1 HATED belly time, no matter how much practice I gave her. DD1 never crawled.  She went straight from cruising to walking. Continue to practice belly time a few minutes each day but don't push it too much.  As much as I wanted DD to crawl it was a bitter sweet that I didn't have to chase her everywhere and baby proof early.

  • My daughter will be 8 months old next week and she's always refused tummy time so I just quit trying and her motor skills aren't lacking and the Dr. says she's doing just fine. She sits on her own and is almost crawling and pulling herself up on things so she's proof that a baby who doesn't get tummy time does just fine.

  • My LO does the same thing. He stays on his tummy for 30 seconds, if I'm lucky, then flips onto his back. I'm not worried about it at all. Many babies never crawl (me being one of them when I was a baby). Like your LO hes passing toys, sitting pretty well unsupported, and so on. Hes also 6.5 months.  I know he'll figure out a way to get around, weather its right to walking or maybe rolling or scooting on his bum.
  • DD can't stand to be on her tummy. I talked to the Pedi at her 6 month check up and she said she was developing perfectly fine and that some kids just skip the tummy rolling phase.

My niece was the exact same way. She's 9 months now and crawling all over the place like a champ!
