Food options?

My little guy is not gaining weight. We just had his12mth check up and he's only 20.3lbs. He has had issues in the past with dairy so he's still on Soy formula. We try giving him finger foods and he's just not interested. He does like puffs and cereal bars. What else can we try??

Re: Food options?

  • Is the pedi concerned? Did they say LO needs to gain weight?

DD only gained 1 pound from 9 months to a year. My pedi said it's completely normal for their weight to level out around this age because they are burning more calories.

(She is 21 pounds as of today and is considered "above average")

  • I agree with wondering if the pedi is concerned? If so, he/she should be able to give you a list of high calorie foods. I think my DD was 18ish pounds at 9 months. I doubt she is more than 19 or 20 right now.

  • We are going to see a GI specialist and Nutritionist. His stats put him at 13.94% for weight?? Weird that 21lbs was above average.... His length was 29.25 which was 33.58%

We're also going to check with an allergist to see if he is indeed allergic to dairy...not fun.

  • My DS is only 17.8 lbs and the doctor wasn't concerned.  He only gained 4 oz since he was 6 months old  and 2 oz since his 9 month appointment.  He is a very good eater.  He started by eating pasta, and a lot of fruit,  he still doesn't care so much for meat, and I noticed food with flavor goes over better the without.

  • That's good to hear!! I appreciate the feedback. I feel like he's healthy, but worry that he's not interested in anything we try to introduce....
  • We went up to 20% at one point for height and weight, but she is usually between 5 and 10 percent. Just a peanut, no big deal. Thats cool you have some appmnts lined up, let us know how it goes and good luck!

My DS was 18 lbs at 12 months and my DD is weighing 17lbs on our home scale. She eats like it's her last meal every meal and he picks at food like a bird and has ever since we switched to finger foods from purees. Our pedi agrees that they are both going to be tall, skinny kids but DS is just incredibly picky.

I have struggled with his eating and weight issues for a year and a half now. And I hope you'll take my advice to not get overly stressed about it (this is really hard to do) but it's so awful to have to constantly worry about how much they are eating.

I hope everything goes well with your GI specialist and Nutritionist. Maybe they can give you some more pointers and tips. Hopefully nothing is wrong with your DS, just picky eating like ours.

So for DS we have had him on a daily vitamin since he was 10 months. We did the liquid poly-visol until he was 2 then switched to the flintstones chewable. I kept him on formula until 15 months and increased the calories/ounce by adding an extra scoop to an 8 oz bottle.

For meals I give him what we're eating with sides of things I know he'll eat. We encourage him to just try a bite with little games like lighting candles or having DH make funny noises/faces. Because another huge challenge is even getting him to TRY something. Sometimes the best thing is telling him he can't have something ;) He eats best in the car, when there is nothing else to do. So anytime we go anywhere I give him a banana or granola bar to munch on. I'm constantly looking for new things he might eat or snack on. He pretty much only eats fruit, dairy and some carbs. Greek yogurt is great too with high protein & fat content, & they have tons of flavors now. I also make a lot of smoothies for him with greek yogurt, fruit & whole milk or a little juice.

Once he got off formula our pedi suggested giving him pediasure, but I asked if Ensure plus is alright and she said that was fine. The Ensure plus has 350 calories to pediasures 240 and twice the protein. I also buy the off brand at walmart which is almost half the price of pediasure. He gets one every morning because he doesn't like to eat breakfast just drink something when he gets up.

I know this is a lot! Just trying to give food suggestions here. If you have any other questions you can always pm me too!

    Good luck!

  • This is very helpful to hear!! It's so hard not to stress when he's not eating. The extra scoop in the bottle is a great idea and I will be doing that tonight! We see the doctor on friday so we'll see what they suggest. I really appreciate all of the feedback!!
