3rd Trimester

Dr says I'm anemic.....

Hi ladies!  So I had my drs appt today.  Scheduled my csection for March 8th at 2:30pm.  Not very happy that it is in the afternoon, but oh well.  Anyway.  Dr tells me that I passed my Glucose test, however I am anemic & need to take an Iron Supplement!!!  Yikes!  Of course after all these things going on, my mind is elsewhere.  So I never asked him what to take.  I went to the drugstore & asked the pharmicist, he told me to take Feosol.  After talking to several friends & family members who have had this problem, they all were put on the same iron supplement, slow fe.  Now I don't know what to do.  I think I'm going to call the dr tomorrow to see exactly what I should take.  Anyone else have this anemia issue?

  • The specific brand doesn't matter so much as long as it doesn't irritate your stomach. The slow release ones are just intended to be less irritating.  Take it with vitamin C  - orange juice is good, or I eat two clementines when I take it. That will help your body to absorb the iron better. The most important thing is to know how many milligrams your OB wants you to take.

Mine has me taking 65mg per day.

  • They called in prescript for me but I was once more symptom and a point or what ever away from needing a blood transfusion....it is 325mg 3 times a day.

You can also eat things high in iron: eat cream of wheat, spinach, meat

Oh and calcium interfers with iron absorption so do not have eat food with much if any calcium when you take any iron.

  • Slow fe is great because it won't constipate you like some other iron supplements will.  I'm always anemic during pregnancy, hope this helps ya!

  • I take a prescription supplement called bifera because all the others upset my stomach too much...(I have a history of severe hyperemesis)

I take omeprazole (generic of prilosec) every day at dinner.  Is this ok to take along with the iron?  The dr didn't say anything....but ya never know!  LOL!

  • You can always call and double check. Slow Fe and Feosol are essentially the same thing (both forms of iron sulfate). What you need to pay attention to is the actual amt of iron in the pill (generic iron sulfate pills are 325 mg but actually only contain 65 mg of iron).

  • I was recently diagnosed with it too I take the Slow Fe and haven't had any problems so far. Good luck!!

  • I also eat 1 cup of multi-grain cheerios each day for breakfast or as a snack.  They contain 100% of the rda of iron. A nurse told me that trick when I was pregnant before. Then I take my slowfe @ lunch.  I have had no problems with constipation.

  • I was instructed to take Feosol and otherwise up my iron intake (and to cut out caffeine bc it blocks the absorption of iron - goodbye one coffee a day Sad)  I haven't noticed any change in my bowels since starting the Feosol.

  • Mine just said to take an iron supplement and didn't specify beyond that.  I asked around and it seemed that Slow FE was the easiest on the tummy so I got that.  I actually got the CVS version.  I generally take it with 2 cuties in the morning and haven't had any issue yet.  Also, you want to take it the opposite time you take your prenatal.

  • Brand doesn't matter, either get the doc to put in a RX or go to a store and buy whatever's there. I'm normally anemic anyway so I have to take iron but it does bother my stomach so I take them 2wks on/2wks off, this way it regulates my levels but doesn't have time to upset my stomach.
